I read this book in school (fourth or fifth grade I think) and I liked it so much that I got the sequels and read them on my own. Not long after, a movie version came out. I don't remember how the movie was, but the books stick in my mind.

Imaginative and fun! A great little adventure story for kids, though in respect to cultural appropriateness, it is not good, and there is racially/culturally offensive material.
Graphic: Racism
Moderate: Racial slurs, Violence
I’d like to say the outdated language didn’t make me cringe more than a little bit I can’t say that. I will however say that this book was fascinating. It would be interesting to see it updated with appropriate language and connections between the characters.

Somehow, this charming and exciting book eluded me during my childhood. I am so glad I finally picked it up to read it. I love the lessons on friendship and respect. I love the hard choices and breathless anticipation that only come with being a child trying to keep a secret. I love the ethical resolution at the end.
I had read this in school and enjoyed re reading it years later. I’m really enjoying reading along with my ten year old!
