It was a little slow for me, but I did love the intertwining of the 3 stories and learning how they all connect.

personally i loved this book although wish they had some content warnings as this read was darker than expected (like lots of dark stuff). out of the three povs, i really liked violet and wanted more from altha; kate was kind of a boring character but since her story tied together with the others’ i wasn’t that bothered overall. women’s resilience was the clear theme throughout the book, and although i liked that message, it felt like there was so much darkness that happened to get to the resilience, we didn’t see them actually *being* resilient after. so the hopefulness that i think the author wanted to highlight wasn’t really shining in the end. i really enjoyed the mystery around it and bouncing from pov to pov to pov and piecing things together with the characters.

now i want to befriend a crow.

Described as an “enthralling novel of female resilience and the transformative power of the natural world,” I figured I would really enjoy this book. I truly love a book about strong, resilient women and thought this sounds like a very interesting historical fantasy. Although I enjoyed the writing style, I didn’t really gel with any of the characters and didn’t ever really get into this book. More importantly, I was not prepared for a somewhat graphic rape scene and every woman in this to experience some type of sexual, physical, or psychological abuse. I expected a book about magic- but that only comes into play at the very end of the novel and I didn’t find it to be empowering at all, but rather a last resort to scary and sad situations. The justice in this novel is fleeting- only coming after chapter and chapters of abuse.

A great book showing three different women taking their life back over the course of centuries. Deals with the horrible truth while continuing a fantasy story, that allows you to see the many ways in which men manipulate and control women. I was happy to see the empowerment of the women in this case, because many books seem to lack that. I also rather enjoy insects and nature myself, so that added value to the story for me.
