I really wanted to love this book, but it just wasn’t as enjoyable of a read as I hoped it would be. First, I really struggled to keep all the details straight across the three stories we were being told. I didn’t love how, especially in the first few chapters, we only got a couple of pages of each story at a time. It not only made the pacing feel very slow in some parts, but it also felt like every time I had adjusted to the character’s voice, I was whisked away and dropped into another story.

Second, I think this book was intended to be an inspiring story of strong feminist women. But it left me feeling pretty sad for these women who lived in solitude and seemed destined to face the same traumas generation after generation. I appreciate that this was a story of survival, and that each woman learned from those that came before her. But even though Kate had resolved to live a more full life, I still didn’t finish the book feeling hopeful for that future.

This was a slow and challenging read as I tend to prefer a faster pace and more lighthearted / fantastical plot. However, I am so glad I stuck it out as the ending was really inspiring and thought-provoking and held up a mirror to motherhood and relationships.

I think all baby mamas should read this book 🙌

I found this book a little hard to get into, I had the physical book and I could ever really get into it. When I switched to audio, I did find that the narrator really made me want to continue reading it. I definitely feel like there probably should have been some trigger warnings on this book, the basic premise is that the women of the wayward line have daughters usually don't keep a husband and have an affinity for nature. It does seem that a lot of the men in their lives are toxic, which is kind of the first trigger warning. There is quite a bit of conversations about miscarriage or unaliving a fetus. So just some trigger warnings about birth and babies. Other than that I actually really liked this book, I didn't think I was going to cuz originally the paper copy booked didn't interest me at all. But, I did find that I did the story well written and thoughtful. I also really liked the characters and the generational story told between Altha, Violet, and Kate.
