Gosh, what was the point of that book? Such a short novel but it took me months to finish it. Way too descriptive while nothing happened. Maybe I lack human emotions but I can't understand how people consider it to be one of the saddest novels. It's as boring as the protagonist.

A Hardyesque twist of fate precipitates tragedy, but instead of ruination we trace the gentle and pathetic consequence through the lives of those affected, the living all haunted by the ghosts of what was not, and unable ever to change their course, though nothing constrains them but themselves.

Beautiful sentences as expected from Trevor.

This is a beautifully written poignant story that has left me thinking about the choices we make in life, the effect of waiting for something longed for, and forgiveness. I don't want to give away much about the plot because this is a short novel and I enjoyed how it slowly unfolded. It is a book I know I will go back and read again.

One small misunderstanding changes everyone's lives in this beautifully written, meditative novel set in an Irish country house by the sea. I did have to work a bit to believe that communication would break down so totally, even back then, but if you can give him that, Trevor writes a sad, sad story that I want to go back and read again.
