I have read a few of Higashino's novels now, and this was my least favourite. It is a very slow paced, crime / mystery novel that I had high hopes for. However, I found it very predictable and therefore not very engaging. I stuck it out to the end in the hopes of their being a big plot twist that through the story on its head, but there wasn't.
The story is very well written, and decades of stories and interactions are woven together very easily. It was enjoyable in that sense. But the mystery / crime element that I had come for was just not as effective as I would have liked. All of my theories were proved right except one, and when you invest in a 500 + page novel, you want to be wrong more than once really.
Not one of his books that I'd personally recommend.

A bit long winded but the suspense is well built up.
AMAZING
I think the fact that you know who's behind all of these things 1/3(ish) in makes the book so insufferable to read (but like in a good way). Just felt like entering the book and telling everyone who is behind it all.
Terrific, beautiful, I hate people.

3 or 4? If you manage to make it through this hefty book then you'll know this is not so much a mystery but a story that keeps pieces hidden until the very end. The characters drift in and out of the story; there are no real protagonists and there are no real 'journeys' - just vignettes and a building of frustration. That said, the story did keep me going. My thoughts after finishing: the characters are still rattling around in my brain a few days after and the sick-and-twisted aspects of the book are pretty disturbing. From what I know of Japanese society, culture and attitudes, I can't help but come away with the impression that quite a lot of people there live "under the midnight sun."
