Spooky, gross. Didn’t like its depiction of women. Very unique plot tho…kind of a page turner?

The story opens in 1973 with the death of a pawnshop owner. The detective Sasagaki acquaints with the victim’s dia ni curiga kalo bokapnya Ryo dibunuh Fumiyo emaknya Yukiho, tapi dia malah mati eh ada suspect baru tapi dia mati juga.
Set up ceritanya cukup lama, bahkan hampir 60-70%(?) aja masih pengenalan characters baru, butuh waktu lama banget buat masuk ke main cases. Ceritanya mulai dari 2 main characters nya masih kecil sampe dewasa ada kali 2 dekade mah, terus kasusnya ini yaudah ketimbun waktu aja sampe hampir 20 tahun gapernah terungkap, tokohnya banyak ku saranin sambil nyatet sih.
Tiap bab tuh beda perspective dari beda karakter, cuma endingnya nih bikin ahh apa banget sih anti klimaks ginibahkan itu kasus sampe selesai pun gapernah terjawab dari mulut pelakunya langsung, everything is speculation, even detective Sasagaki admits it himself in the final chapter
Murder aside, it’s a story about how two tragic souls walk together under the midnight sun for twenty years. A book that end with more questions than answers, and that’s ironic bcs its a mystery novel🤐.

You know how the sun rises and sets at a certain time each day? In the same way, all of our lives have a day and night. But it’s not set like it is with the sun. Some people walk forever in the sunlight, and some people have to walk through the darkest night their whole lives. When people talk about being afraid, what they’re afraid of is that their sun will set. That the light they love will fade. That’s why you’re frightened, isn’t it?”
PROS:
Interesting characters.
Proper character development.
Gripping narration.
One of Higashino's best.
Cons:
Few loose strings which need explanation.

"These fictions within fictions and systems within systems create a hall of mirrors that reflects the manipulations of Higashino's characters, whose plots rise and are submerged before our eyes.
Journey Under the Midnight Sun isn't a whodunnit or even a whydunnit but a what-exactly-is-being-dunnit. It is also an extraordinary work of popular fiction. You could read it as a potted history of modern Japan, an exploration of a crumbling social order (gender, class, money, obedience), a ludic literary puzzle that plays with genre expectations."

A crime epic, and a deconstruction of the genre as a whole. If I could always and only ever read books like this, life would be fantastic. How insidious a story, and how brilliant because of it! The way the story twines its roots over the span of 20 years, and characters fall in and out of the path of the two, "the goby and the shrimp," the myriad storylines that circle and ensnare each other, my late realizations of the causes and effects of actions taken and events transpired.
