What a satisfying conclusion to a Duology. It was amazing to watch Rue develop even more from the first book. We see her same ferocity in Ashes of Gold, but we also see a vulnerable side to her that really gets fleshed out. It made her feel even more real and relatable. I think that may be what made me like this sequel even more than book one. The storytelling and world building was captivating and really kept my interest as well. The only thing that I didn’t fully enjoy was the love triangle. I adored one of the love interests and really despised the other, but the bouncing back and forth felt not only repetitive but also unnecessary for the plot or character development of Rue. But, I am a bit picky when it comes to love triangles so that may just be my personal preference. All in all, a strong ending to a great duology.

OMG! so first of all you need to read part 1 which is Wings of Ebony, do not I repeat do not read this without reading that first. So glad Rue is back and the author did not have us waiting too long for the sequel. In Ashes of Gold Rue is trying to remember what happened to her when she was locked up without her magic, but she knows that whatever happened she can not give up on her people. Rue is still trying to fit in with having magic and helping her family but she its all a learning process. I love that she is learning who she is and learning to trust herself more throughout the book as it goes on. Rue is definitely not one to mess with, with such a big heart and so much determination she is determined to help her people and get the magic returned and defeat the Chancellor.
It made no sense that I was up at 2am reading the book, but I needed to know what was going to happen. I needed to know who was going to betray Rue and I had my suspicions and was wrong of course but it kept me on my toes. I will say the first few pages are a little slow its kind of piecing the last book and this one together but once you get past that and you get into it you will be fully into it!! There are so many twist and things you aren't expecting that's going to happen in this book! So glad part 2 was out and I was able to read it Rue definitely is black girl magic! I can't wait to see what else the author has planned for the future because I will read it!

This was kind of a surprise pickup for me. I didn't love the first book, finding it just okay when compared to some of the other books surrounding the same sort of topics, so I wasn't exactly chomping at the bit to return to Rue's world. But when ads described this as the conclusion to a duology—a surprise to me—I figured it would be a good idea to go ahead and finish the series. So I went ahead and re-read Wings of Ebony and jumped straight in on this sequel.

Overall, despite all the problems I had, I'd still definitely recommend this series. I think there are some great messages for younger readers about overcoming adversity and finding inner strength, of forgiveness and mercy, and of learning from the past and moving forward. I can't say I loved everything about these books, but I'm sure others will see things that I didn't and connect to the story in ways I couldn't. There's definitely an audience for this series, it just didn't happen to include me this time. If there's ever another book set in Ghizon, I'll probably check it out, but in the meantime I'll be seeing what other fantasy worlds have in store for me.
