This story was so charming.

I loved the characters and the world Margaret Rogerson built in this book and would've only loved this story more if there were more books set in the world described. Margaret's prose was cozy and a bit whimsical, like snuggling into a perfectly worn-in sweater. This story was exactly the palate refresher I needed after a little reading slump.

I adored Rook and Isobel and I am glad I started my first experience with Margaret Rogerson's work by reading her debut. I have had Sorcery of Thorns and Vespertine sitting on my shelf and now I know I will likely love them as well.

3.5 stars for the autumnal vibes, nature writing, and depiction of fae folk.

Unfortunately, this book suffers from insta-love and the "she's not like other girls" trope. Also the age gap is a tad creepy, but at least the male love interest isn't as creepy as a certain sparkly vampire. And the MC has an actual personality.

Charming and whimsical. Avoids falling into cliches or feeling overly YA-ish. Love the mix of cuteness (ie the goat twins) with the truly bizarre and creepy nature of the faeries. Feels lush and lyrical. One complaint I have is it’s weird that the main character is 17 when Rook feels like a grown adult especially because she feels more like a 20 year old in terms of maturity and I think in some ways if she were 19 or 20 it would actually fit the story slightly better? Any way maybe it seems pedantic but it does always feel a little weird to me when fantasy books pair 16-17year olds with 500 year olds (even tho I know the whole thing is that fairies mature at a different pace).

Good and easy read. I love the characters, stories about Fae are always so strange but I do find them amusing. I would recommend this if you want to read a book which has tense moments but isn't overwhelming.
