I wasn’t the right reader for this book. I struggled to stick with it. For me, it felt more like an autobiography or a journal, and the 13 year old characters felt precocious and off-putting. There was no one I connected with. I would have found it more believable if they’d been 15 or older.

There are many glowing reviews, so I hope my experience with this story is not the same as yours, potential reader.

I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley (2 years ago) in exchange for my honest review.

The characters in this book are sticky and this story i have a feeling will niggle around in my brain for a long time. 4.5

Somewhat compelling, but disturbing story.

Very quick read about 2 13 year old girls growing up in San Francisco in the late 80’s. I thought it was just ok. I was bothered by some of the adult situations the 13-year-olds were getting into and found that part unbelievable enough to turn me off.

I love Vendela Vida books. Her details are so precise and vivid. The valentines for the teachers cracked me up, and it brought me back to the feelings of eighth grade. The mood and tone were effective for me.

"I am a very good student with a sinister side," "Like all thirteen year old girls I find the word secret intriguing," "My sense of humor really is not for everyone," "The four of us become like paper dolls--we are always together, connected." I love the narrator's voice.

4.5 maybe??? A really pleasant surprise!!!! Picked this one up at a library sale after a 1 second skim of the jacket description (which I immediately forgot) so went into it mostly blind and wow, absolutely LOVED. The vibes were fantastic and idk man is there anything better than beautifully written coming-of-age stories about teenaged girls???

"We Run The Tides" is the funny story of friends in the 80s who... well, who just get carried away. A reminder of what it means to be 16 and desperately want to stand out in a world where attention is currency.
