I enjoyed this book the further i got into it. I thought the writing was a bit choppy for most of it, which wasn’t really striking me as my style. Looking back after finishing it, i think i liked the book > than i did while i was reading it - it covers the intersection of friends in their adolescence and was very specific to the SF area. I felt like it was a bit dry until the plot started rounding the corner, well into the 2nd half.
i didn’t really understand what ended up happening and the plot was just weird. i liked the setting but the writing style also just irked me
I really enjoyed how much was said in this novel without it ever actually saying it. It ended and at first I was surprised and felt like it was missing pieces, but the more I think about it, the more I am enjoying being left to connect the dots myself in order to come to my own conclusions. Plus, Marin Ireland narrated it and that makes any book so enjoyable.
There is always one girl in a year group who casts a spell over everyone and you can't quite work out why. People do things for her when they know they shouldn't and yet she always seems to get away with it. In this very enjoyable book a girl questions the actions of that popular girl a little more than the rest of her friends, resulting in unintended consequences. The politics of school and friendship are beautifully described; the pain of being ostracised, the confusion of first sexual experiences and the conflict between truth and popularity as a teen girl.
I appreciated the ending; the penny dropping all those years later as to what was really going on was satisfying and realistic - I still gets moments of clarity thirty five years since I was last a teenager when it suddenly dawns on me why someone behaved in a certain way.
A top read.

I really enjoyed the teenage humor of this story. The descriptions of people and places. It was slow moving but made me laugh out loud at parts.
Eulabee is an amusing, quirky and very observant privileged teenager. I enjoyed her dark humor, puns & wit. The pitfalls of youth are all well captured.
What I didn’t understand or enjoy was the ending.
The entire story is about events that occur to the narrator at age 13, but then it skips to her being nearly 50 years old.
That in my opinion was not necessary at all.
It should have ended with the revelation about Gentle, because that was a sad & poignant plot point.
The story lost two stars because of my disappointment in the unnecessary time jump.
