Gave me Big Little Lies-of-teens vibes.
2.5 stars? I'm mostly ambivalent about this book. It was a good, quick read, tight and well-written. I don't think I'll be talking about it long into the future, but it did keep me turning pages way past my bedtime. I understood the theme the author was trying to explore about how the sexualization of young girls warps adolescence, but it seemed a little obtrusive to me, when I was more interested in the dynamics of female
friendship at play. listened to part of it on audiobook, narrated by Marin Ireland, who is a great fit as a narrator for this.

This is a low three stars. Like a 2.5. There was a lot about the writing I really enjoyed- the atmosphere, the sense of place, the disorienting limited perspective of characters this young, the 80s setting!! I haven’t read a ton of books quite like this, but still a lot was missing for me. I wanted the author to push it a little further maybe, and I just didn’t connect to these characters and their particular experiences of youth (not that I have to), but.. I don’t think all the characters were developed equally, and the relationships weren’t as *strong as I wanted them to be. I also hated the ending. I don’t understand why the flash forward was necessary. It felt like i a cop out to me… and just destroyed/completely took me out of the dreamlike sense of time and place the rest of the book worked to build.
This was compelling, but by the end, I really didn’t like any of the characters. I did like the last chapter, though, which was a fitting end.
