I love Dolly Parton--she's an amazing musician and human being. I mean, c'mon, she's part of the reason we have the Moderna vaccine. I thought she could do no wrong, but this book was not great. Big plot holes and over the top characters. Overwrought and goofy all at once. 2.5 stars. I still love Dolly.

When you read this book you won’t be able to help yourself from comparing Dolly Parton and the main characters, it’s a part of the experience. And yes it’s a little cliché with a hint of a plot twist at the end but Dolly had also written an entire album for the book and I’m a sucker for Miss Parton. Very cute and well written.

I listened to the audio version and loved hearing Dolly voice the character written like her own life. The story did not end as I expected. AnnieLee has been through some terrible things in her young life, and it’s sweet to see her get a break and turn it around.

I was very excited for this audiobook. I’m a huge fan of Dolly Parton! And I love an audiobook with a full cast. The first 1/3 of this book was enjoyable and promising. But then it lagged for me. I stuck with it hoping for a good ending to wrap up the mysteries. However it felt like the ending was written by my second graders. It felt rushed and contrived.
Slow to start… I was listening to the audiobook whilst doing things around my house. If it hadn’t been for that, this would have been a DNF for sure. It took about 15 chapters to catch my interest. The main character is pretty irritating and makes many stupid decisions. They claim it’s because of traumas she’s suffered…. I too have suffered horrific traumas not far off from what she has and there’s no way I’d be making dumbass choices like she does. She’s infuriating and the reason the book didn’t get 4 stars. Her stupidity and the length of time it takes to finally get around to telling us why she is the way she is…. I was over it. I did enjoy the character of Ethan though.
Dolly: I’m going to write a book. About a pretty little thing who can sing.
Work experience kid: and?
Dolly: she’ll write some songs and get real famous.
Work experience kid: and?
Dolly: come on now, it’ll be a hoot.
Work experience kid: have you ever read a book?
Dolly: don’t make me fire you!
Work experience kid: let’s get an established author to help?
Dolly: well ok, as long as my names on the cover.
James: ok, we’ll let’s just have the singer allude to something mysterious to build up the mystery.
Dolly: oh sure, who doesn’t like a little mystery.
Work experience kid: and?
James: then we’ll have a big fight scene at the end.
Dolly: perfect!
Work experience kid: um…
James: that’s a wrap.
Dolly: and remember, my name gets top billing.
James: huh?
Dolly: write that up for us now darlin’ *waves dismissively at the work experience kid as she leaves the room*
James: thanks mate.
Work experience kid: fuck it. *bangs out 80,000 words and heads off to the pub*
And that’s how this book was written.
