I wanted to like this book a lot because I love Dolly Parton's music, but it was just aggressively mediocre. It wasn't terrible. But it also wasn't good.
I listened to an audiobook version, though, and the narrator's tendency to phrase 50% of the sentences as though they were a surprise definitely annoyed me, though, so maybe reading it would have been a different experience.

I listened to the audio version. The story itself is not all thrilling, nothing terribly exciting happens in the whole 10 hours. The story drags and is incredibly choppy, the characters are infuriating, and dialog does not flow naturally. Most of the time I enjoy a full cast audiobook, but the editing in this one made it feel so chopped up, like the characters were not even in the same room when talking with each other.
I honestly expected a lot more from this book.

Entertaining, fast-paced & fun! This story had me cranking up my country music favorites. I really enjoyed the making-it-in-Nashville storyline & the initial romantic suspense aspects (that had a Nora Roberts feel). Though the main character remained a bit too self-involved for my liking, she pulled off the spunky newcomer well & the cast of characters surrounding her--especially the country music diva voiced by Dolly Parton--was great!
If I were to make an assumption on how a book written by Dolly Parton, the Queen of Country would look like, I am sure it would be very much like “Run Rose Run”. Having said that, when throwing James Patterson in the mix, I was expecting something a little more gripping from the mystery perspective of things. Regardless, this was a good story of a star on the rise, with a mysterious past that won’t let her forget where she came from.
Dolly Parton really does an amazing job infusing country music, stardom and the music industry into this book. And I absolutely love the idea of accompanying a book with an album (as I write this I am listening to Big Dreams and Faded Jeans). This could be the start of something. Why wait for a movie to have a Soundtrack…..
