I thought I was done with James Patterson, but then I saw he had a book with Dolly Parton and-This one is worth checking out.
It's a pretty basic thriller-a woman with a mysterious past comes to Nashville and starts to make it big, but she's being stalked and followed by someone from her past.
But, with the help of a retired Country Music Star and one of her studio musicians, the young woman starts to find her voice musically and starts to become more than her past, until her past starts to catch up with her again.
It's really good, like, surprisingly good for a James Patterson book. Lots of heart.
The audiobook has Dolly and Kelsey Ballerini and a full cast reading it, so the dialogue really pops and works.
I kind of wish they'd included the songs themselves in the audiobook, but I understand that I wouldn't have the songs if I just read the book, so it's a fair cop.

I still really hated that book about the French detective-Absolute trash and garbage and a terrible character. But this shows that Patterson can still get some good thrills and excitement when dealing with good characters and a good co-author.

I wish the whole book had been like the last 10 chapters. Also why is the world does Dolly not sing on the audiobook! I listened to the whole thing wondering why it was written by country musics finest, and she didn’t even sing the songs, they were all just read… so lame. But I enjoyed the story, and really enjoyed the last bit. But I found myself wishing that the end of the story had been the plot half way through.

“Fate granted some people their wildest, greatest wishes while leaving the simplest pleas of others unanswered. Sometimes you could see the scars and sometimes you couldn't. But everybody had them. When a girl didn't have anyone to stand up for her, that girl had to stand up for her own damn self.”

Strong on the music side, but not a lot of plot.

My hopes for this book were high. I was thinking this would be an even better version of Daisy Jones & The Six. It’s not.

Ohhh Dolly, you are great! This book is not.

If you want to read a book with logical characters, this is not for you. There were so many bad dad jokes in the dialogue that sent my eyes a rollllllin’.

Minor Spoiler:

Imagine that you are a person attacked in your hotel room when you think you’re alone while securely locked in. Now imagine that you stay more nights in that hotel room after this attack even though you know you’ve been successfully tracked by some dark (and lethal??!) figure from your past. That’s basically how the book went.

It was an easy read and the characters were enjoyable.
