Great Read

Actual Rating: 3.5

This is an enjoyable read. It did not disappoint! I am glad that I got to read a book by Dolly Parton and James Patterson. Run, Rose, Run is about a new, young songwriter-singer, who is trying to leave her past behind. In order to do that, she hitchhikes to Nashville. I thought the story was great. I really loved how both Dolly Parton and James Patterson developed a mystery crime suspense thriller story. I thought all of the characters were great. However, my favourite character is Ruthanna. Also, it was great to hear some of the great country singers add to the audiobook and take the characters to a different level. I really enjoyed hearing Dolly Parton as one of the characters. I cannot wait to read more James Patterson books. The reason for the 3.5 rating is that I thought that there could have been more to the country singer/music storyline. Overall, a great read.

Obsessed with AnnieLee's character as a whole and her chemistry with Ethan. I only wish we would have had more details earlier on.

Run, Rose, Run is a thrilling page-turner and a book that you can easily lose yourself in.

The story follows AnnieLee, a singer-songwriter who is on the run and hoping to begin a new life in Nashville. She’s discovered by retired singer Ruthanna and her friend, Ethan, who help her to manage her rapidly rising stardom. While she revels in her newfound freedom, she is constantly looking over her shoulder. She can’t outrun her past for long and she soon discovers that it’s quickly catching up to her.

AnnieLee is what makes this story so fantastic. Her personality shines throughout and I quickly fell in love with her. I loved how she always remained true to herself even when she rose to fame and was advised she needed to create an image for herself. Instead of donning expensive dresses and high heels, she rocks up in jeans and a t-shirt. Her fearlessness and desire to succeed will have you rooting for her from the start.

AnnieLee is not the only character who brings this story to life. We also have Ruthanna and Ethan who are always there to offer AnnieLee support and ensure she makes the right decisions for her career. However, both of these characters are also hiding their own secrets about their past. Ruthanna is a massively successful and beloved singer but she now refuses to perform. She’s protective of AnnieLee and treats her like she’s family despite not knowing anything about her past or where she came from. I loved Ruthanna and my heart broke for her when it’s revealed why she no longer performs. It provides insight into the music industry and how badly celebrities can be treated for the sake of a news story. It was clear to see why she’s so protective of AnnieLee.

Ethan is hiding a very different secret and you can tell how much his past has shaped who he’s become. He’s so lovely to AnnieLee and always there for her. I was really rooting for them to be together but I understood Ethan’s frustrations about how little AnnieLee would reveal about her past. He wanted to understand her and get closer to her, but he felt he couldn’t do that because he barely knew her.

AnnieLee’s dark past remains a secret for most of the story, but there were times I really wanted her to lower her defenses and confide in someone. Despite how enjoyable the story was, with AnnieLee performing and building a name for herself, there was hidden danger throughout and I was waiting with bated breath for her past to finally catch up with her. You know someone is after her but don’t know who or why. It’s very cloak-and-dagger!

The song lyrics are fantastic and I’m so glad that Dolly has produced an accompanying album because there were a few songs I desperately wanted to listen to while I was reading. Listening to the songs will definitely enhance the story and make it more emotional, as well as bring the characters to life. I’m looking forward to rereading this and listening to the album as I go along.

The short chapters and AnnieLee’s reluctance to share her past even as her stardom rises makes this a fantastic page-turner. I was thoroughly enjoying the focus on the music industry, but also anxiously waiting for someone from AnnieLee’s past to show up and destroy everything she’s worked hard for.

Run, Rose, Run is a book that you’ll want to devour in one sitting. I highly recommend it!

While I enjoyed the characters this book should under no circumstances be listed as a thriller. Absolutely no tension, nothing to do with the "thriller" part of the story even really kicks in until the last 100 pages.

If it was marketed as a slow burn romance then I'd probably have rated it much higher.

This was my first foray in James Patterson please tell me this isn't the norm for his books?
