I loved the forced situations that otherslived for. the upbringing and situation of the children had such a massive impact on their lives.

well, 2/2 anthony doerr books have made me cry now. i'm not usually one for realistic fiction in historical settings (particularly times of war) but this book was amazing. i love how doerr writes, and i loved how the marie-laure and werner's stories intertwined. the cast of characters was wonderful, and the ending had me perpetially crying/tearing up. frederick's story broke my heart as much as i immediately loved his character, and werner's story did the same, and theme of long-distance communication throughout was so well-done. i also loveddddd how descriptive the book was during the scenes where marie-laure is learning to navigate paris with the help of her father's models of the city, and honestly every scene from marie-laure's perspective was so beautiful, maybe even because of the limitation of her blindness.

all that to say, leave it to doerr to write an entire, emotionally-compromising novel after seeing someone fail to appreciate the wonder of modern long-distance communication (according to wikipedia, anyway)!
