Finley Montgomery sees people other people don't see. Her grandmother can see them. Some of these people are distant relatives, some are simply dead people who need something from her. Usually, Finley tries to ignore them. She is training herself to interact with them on her own terms, not letting them dictate her life, with the help of her loving grandmother.
Recently, a little girl has gone missing. Finley begins hearing a weird noise that she quickly realizes is paranormal, nobody else hears the noise except for her grandmother. They discuss the noise trying to determine what this could be, and how it could be a clue to anything. This noise has no context. Eventually, the missing girl's mother seeks out the help of Finley's grandmother who occasionally does some work with a private investigator as a psychic in unsolved cases. The grandmother realizes that this case is for Finley alone to solve, and can't be of much assistance this time.
The investigation they embark on turns out to be much more involved than simply a missing girl, and the end has a twist that you will not see coming at all. Along the way, some very despicable characters are introduced, and at times I wanted to shout at the characters that they were doing the wrong thing, and I enjoyed this. The suspense keeps the reader at the edge of their seat nearly start to finish.
I highly recommend this to anyone who likes psychological thrillers, or paranormal thrillers.
POTENTIALLY DISTURBING CONTENT:
Sex: no explicit sexual situations, though child molestation is alluded to
Violence: kidnapping, violence against children, murder
Language: curse words are used liberally throughout the entire text.

I liked it. Quick read, well written, interesting characters. But....it felt like I'd read this before. Not literally, just plot wise.
The beginning captured me right from the start. It was scary and the world was unknown. Then the paranormal element came into the story and I was like, 'ohhhh, yea, I likey!'. Finley is a fully developed character and enjoyed reading about the young woman trying to find her place in a world that doesn't understand her paranormal abilities. This twist helped the story differentiate itself from others and provided the depth I was looking for.
Where I felt daja vu was in the kidnapped daughter and the mother who wouldn't give up. It was reminiscent of novels with the same type of storyline, so during Merri's storyline (a grieving mother trying to locate her kidnapped daughter) it felt like, been there done that. I started just skipping her storyline and I found I enjoyed the book more.
It's a good read and I'll definitely pick up more of Ms. Unger's The Hallows series. I want to go on that journey with Finley!

I don't know what I expected when I started reading this book but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. There are really 3 POV's that happen throughout the book, which usually annoys me, but the author tends to switch the POV at appropriate chapter breaks and it's obvious whose POV you are in at the moment.
There is one point, however, near the end of the book where I got confused. I knew which character POV was being used but the time frame thru me off. I had to go back a couple of times and them I got hit by a clue by 4.
IMO the author left an opportunity for a sequel, but I kind of hope that isn't the case. Which I admit is odd because I liked the book but I have no desire to read a sequel

This was my first Lisa Unger novel, and I was pleasantly surprised. Ink and Bone is a mystery, thriller, and paranormal all rolled into one. Finley Montgomery can see spirits or visions, and the "gift" runs in her family. When a girl goes missing in her hometown, Finley uses her abilities for the first time to try to help the police find out what happened. She's extremely reluctant to embrace her ability, and this reluctance runs throughout the story.
Finley is an interesting character, and I enjoyed her struggle with her ability--it gave the story a bit of a twist. The pacing is strong and Unger develops the back story well. The last 100 pages or so were great, and I found myself itching to find out what would happen. A great read for those who enjoy stories with well-developed settings and strong characters.

Definitely more of a 4.5. I enjoyed the alternating narrators, and the paranormal element really added to the story.
What the hell was that? Eliza was found, but where was Eliza's brother and father? This book was long, dull, and confusing... was it because this was the 5th book? Maybe. Didn't know it was the 5th but whatever. Gah. Also also also. I don't like cheaters. Male or female. Don't like em.
