I’m going to be honest and say that I don’t, as a general rule, like when book reviews start with the words « I don’t generally read [genre]…. » but I am going to have to do it here. I don’t generally read horror, because gore grosses me out and I scare easily. But I am a big fan of comic anthologies and a Canadian (if from the other side of the continent), and it is with that in mind that I’m about to review Bones of the Coast.
Bones of the Coast is an awesome, scary, beautiful anthology and I have mixed feelings about it. Good mixed feelings! All of the stories contained inside are both interesting and, well, vaguely upsetting. Which was probably the point.
Some of these authors are names that are familiar to me, like Sfé R. Monster, whose art style was immediatelly recognizable after having read Beyond last year. In this anthology, they pair with Kalyna Riis-Philips to tell a story about bravery and magic in Don’t Go to the Island.
Others were completely new and awesome discoverie, with stories so intriguing (Shannon Campbell and Pam Wishbow’s The Harvest, for exemple, that both has a very attractive artstyle and a poetic storytelling) that I will be sure to check out these creator’s other works.

the fu-go - racism
the cove - self harm
the logging road - animal death
the shining one - self harm, animal death
drag you down - suicide
I'm a sucker for these independent horror comic anthologies, especially ones with interesting themes. in this collection you can feel the love for the woods and coast in the fear each author and artist creates - it's the familiar horror of home. some really intriguing pieces here - I'll definitely keep my eye out for more from this publisher!

I probably would have appreciated this more if I was more familiar with the pacific northwest, but the art was phenomenal regardless.
This is a wonderfully diverse, beautifully illustrated collection of Twilight-Zone-esque stories which captures something essential about the Canadian west coast. I particularly enjoyed Smoke and Cedar, The Cove, The Patron, and Site 17. My only real criticism is that some of the stories felt a little too short for me to fully get into.
Favorite stories:
-The Harvest
-Free Ride
-The White Raven
-The Cove
-Home
I backed this anthology on Kickstarter many moons ago, and it arrived in my mailbox earlier this month. I was so excited to read these stories, and I'm so happy to report that this is a great collection of short horror comics. Some of the stories are creepy, some seem to have an underlying message, several make you feel really uncomfortable, and a few leave you scratching your head, but all of them are fantastic.
Each comic is written and illustrated by different people, and no two stories are remotely alike. I think, though, that my favorite aspect of the anthology was the diversity of characters. There was LGBTQ+ representation, characters of color, interracial couples, and a variety of ages represented.
I definitely recommend this anthology to anyone and everyone!

A lovely collection by many talented creators.
My personal favorites were the underwater nightmare of "Low Viz" by Kris Sayer and the magically monstrous "don't go to the island" by Sfe R. Monster.

A throughly enjoyably creepy comic anthology of short horror stories, all set in the Pacific Northwest and by local artists and authors. From a Kickstarter project.
