The King by Skye Warren

I've been meaning to read the Endgame trilogy and haven't had a chance. After having my mind blown with this one, I'll certainly be making the time. The King is beautifully written and at times, absolutely heart-wrenching. Penny's story sucked me in from the very first page and didn't let go. From practically raising herself to going to great lengths to save her father, this young girl's tale becomes intertwined with Damon's, and while he's not exactly a good guy, you can't help but love him. I can't wait to see where their story goes.

Nothing like I was expecting with the first half being so heavily based in reality and the heartbreaking truth of some childhood experiences, but not disappointing either. I can see the interest.

Skye has ruined me! I can’t focus on work, I can’t sleep, I can’t do anything normal, because I became addicted to her books! 🙈
I feel the permanent presure of reading what happens next in her books. I’ve never done thing before. I’ve never read so many books from the same author one after another.
This book had only one kiss! And it felt like it was enough. But I know that the next one will amaze me. I’m sure Damon will surprise me.
With one thing I don’t agree with. Penny’s age. She’s so young... but still her chemistry with Damon is so palpable. Like I can almost touch it. And I crave it. So bad...

The King is such an enthralling story; it sparks the flame between Damon and Penny. Their beginning starts as a slow burn that has the potential to grow into an inferno. Skye Warren’s writing sucks you in and doesn’t let go until the very end. I love how Skye builds the relationship between Damon and Penny making the reader really feel the bond between the two.

My heart broke for Penny in this book. She goes through hell and back, but still manages to come out strong and independent. She is probably one of my favorite heroines! We get to see how Penny grows into a teenager that longs to be more than she is allowed to be. She devours any math text she can under the radar, but it becomes futile when her father uses her particular skills to help him gamble. When family dumps you in such a deep hole you have no way to crawl yourself out, do you lie down dead or come out fighting?

When my heart broke for Penny in this story, my soul shattered for Damon. He has grown into such a dark captivating alpha male, but you can still glimpse the broken man inside that his father created. He has had to endure so much growing up with a psychopathic evil father, I feel like he is drowning in darkness and the light he began to see in Penny got snuffed out by his guilt.

I absolutely loved this book and cannot wait to finish Damon and Penny’s story in The Queen.

3.5 Stars.

To be more specific, the first half of the book is five star material while the second half is like a two. After you do a little mishy-mashy the final rating is somewhere in the threes.

Sigh.

The writing is fantastic. The characters are quite interesting. The plot promises a captivating story. But this book ended up being a flop because it was too VAGUE. No details on anything that happens.

4.5 Underwater Stars!!

I couldn’t gush enough about Skye Warren. If you know me at all, you know I am a HUGE fan. This series is one of my favorites of hers, after the Stripped and Endgame series. Lol. Ok. I love all her books. Leave me alone!! Her writing is able to capture beauty in the darkness. And there is A LOT of darkness in her books. Just gimme all the darkness.

We have something in common now. We’re both monsters. Not the kind you can see on the outside. He wears a secret smile on his handsome face. Bruises faded back to pale skin on my naked body. It’s only inside that something can never be repaired. Only inside that I never really leave the water. Inside that I learn to need the dark.

There was a turning point in this book that I loved. I could literally FEEL the words turning to a dark place. There is a pivotal before and after to Penny’s story, and to be completely honest, I prefer the AFTER. Skye’s writing just hits me harder when it’s darker and gritty and honest.

Penny. She is young and very smart, like genius with numbers, rain man style. Penny’s father has a gambling addiction, and Penny gets caught in the crossfire of her father’s addiction, and it doesn’t end well. Her body and mind are dragged through the fire, and let me tell you, I am glad that Skye didn’t give us all the details on this because I don’t think I could have handled it. Penny is ruined in this book, and Damon is on the other side to throw his soul off a cliff for her.

Damon. He is a tortured soul….literally. His father tortured his body and his mind when he was young. I am aching for more of him. I really appreciate that Skye included The Prince as part of the prequel to this story because it gives us more little morsels into what makes Damon tick. But I really do need MORE of Damon!!

Damon & Gabriel. Gabriel & Damon. Just put me in the middle of that delicious sandwich, please. I loved the snippets of Gabriel in this book (BECAUSE HE’S MINE!!).

Gabriel Miller is as bold as thunder, rumbling, unmistakable. Damon Scott is lightning, so bright he’ll blind you. They’re both forces of nature but only one will kill you just to touch him. Only one will burn you in a flash.

Most of this book is a re-telling of the Endgame series, but from Penny’s pov. It definitely helped to fill in the blanks with Damon and Penny and how they get to where they are at the end of the Endgame series.

Yes, this ends in a cliffy. Do I care?

Not.

One.

Bit.

Skye could write cliffhangers all day long, and I wouldn’t stop reading them. It’s her words that matter and her words that I love.

The author always pulls me in and leaves me wanting more. This story was no different I need more of Damon and Penny. Once I began the story I couldn’t stop the twists and turns making me try and understand how the pieces will fall. Absolutely amazing and highly recommend!! Can’t wait to read the next piece of their story.

This book was very different for me even though it was in the genre I mostly read. It was dark but it wasn't gritty. it had little sexy scenes yet was still amazingly romantic!
