The King

After being introduced to Damon during the Endgame Trilogy, I was looking forward to his story. During that series, he was an ever present force and I was desperate to find out what lurked beneath his darkness.
He fulfilled all my expectations. And more! He is not just dark, he is blacker than the deepest pits of hell. I think I kind of love him!
Penny was a worthy opponent for Damon. She was strong and feisty. Stripped of her childhood, puts her in the unenviable position of having to grow up too soon. Coupled with her intelligence, I sometimes forgot just how young she was.
Some of the time line crosses with the Endgame Trilogy and I enjoyed seeing those events from a completely different perspective.

I felt like I was floating throughout the story that I can't quite make sense of everything.

Title: The King
Author: Skye Warren
Category: Dark Romance
Series or Standalone: Series, Book #1
POV: First Person, Heroine's PoV
Plot: 5
Characters: 5
Scorching Level: 5
HEA: Um...hello. Not telling.

OMG. Damon Scott & Penny. I Repeat, DAMON SCOTT & PENNY. I love, love these two characters so much!!! Skye Warren shocked me with this one! Why??? Because Penny 's story impacted me in such a way that I devoured the book!!!
Trapped after her father keeps giving into his weakness for gambling, she is indebted.
To whom? Hmm, this is a good question.
This is where Damon Scott comes in...Or is this where he comes back. If you have already read The Prince then you already know how these two met and what Damon sacrificed for Penny.
If you have not read the prequel, no worries. It is included in the book.
Damon is mysterious, handsome but also very, very cold. His past is obscure, his power in the darkness quite certain. He has a way to save Penny's father but Jonathan Scott will ruin everything.
Who is Jonathan Scott??? A hated character that I was first introduced to in the Sweet Villaintine anthology and I would be lying if I said that he didn't fascinate me.
His role in this book is a pivotal one. He is the darkness, he is a monster, he is the devil that breathes and lives in your worst nightmares.
His purpose? Penny.
His goal? To hurt his son, Damon.
Will he succeed? Read to find out!
Enter Skye Warren 's world of debts and danger and you won't be disappointed.
Also, Gabriel and Avery appear in the book and OMG! I loved it.
Expect the delicious chemistry we have come to know from this author.
The forbidden bond between Penny & Damon is out of this world. Penny 's age and innocence is what drives Damon and I just loved it.
I cannot wait for more!!! I am ready for The Queen!!

The King is the first novel in Endgame's spin-off series, Masterpiece Duet. It's about Penny and Damon Scott and majority of the events took place from The Castle. I like it but it didn't lived up to my expectations. I'm kind of bummed with that because I love Penny and Damon more than Gabriel and Avery. The romance between them fell flat but it's understable because Penny was still a minor and Damon doesn't like to take advantage her vulnerability. You can tell Damon fancies her but he's waiting for the right time.

I uplifted my rating because we get a history of their first encounter. Penny was a bright girl and she has a great future ahead. She's so good in Mathematics, my least favorite subject. Haha. While Jonathan Scott is around no one is safe. I am careful with my words to avoid spoilers. Since I didn't miss a lot (except from Damon and Penny's past/first meet up), I could have skipped this and jump to next one.

Penny’s struggle is real. She lives in a trailer with her deadbeat dad in the worst part of town. The highest level of success she can hope for is to be a corner girl. But Penny is too smart for that and dreams of escaping the only life she’s ever known. Working a going nowhere job at the diner doesn’t even help her make ends meet but her loyalty to her father keeps her right in the gutter with him.

Penny’s father has got to be the most unsuccessful gambler of all time. He gambles every night with money he doesn’t have. His priority is the bet, not taking care of his only child. He bets with money he borrows and struggles every single time to pay it back. He finally bets more than he will ever have and in order to pay it back he bets his most valuable possession - his daughter. He owes a large sum to the biggest game in town. Who’s the boss? None other than the wild boy from the woods - Damon.

After sacrificing his freedom in order to protect Penny from his father, Damon had grown into some sort of Kingpin in their city. His name drew fear, lust and envy from everyone and he did nothing to stop it. He was rich and successful at whatever it was he did. He grew up to be the most beautiful man Penny had ever known, but the fact that he had followed in his father’s footsteps was a major turnoff. I was willing to give sweet Damon the benefit of the doubt.

♚A true testament to the how much I enjoyed this author’s writing is that I hated the narrator but loved the book. Go figure. Okay, maybe hate is a strong word, but there was definitely more than one occasion where I wanted to wring Penny’s neck. For most of this book I found her to be rude, discourteous, disingenuous, inconsiderate, ungrateful, disrespectful, and the list goes on. While I respected her intellect and the difficult situations she found herself in, I wasn’t a fan of the way she treated people. Especially Damon. Maybe it’s because of my great affection for him why I couldn’t tolerate her intolerable attitude and behavior. So kudos to Skye Warren for getting me to fall in love with this story despite my resistance towards Penny.
♚Did I already mention how much I loved Damon? I would have given anything to get his POV. During the many events that took place in this story, his perspective would have been appreciated to balance out the immaturity of Penny’s. I found that quite a few details were left out and I think they would have been explained better in his voice. I hope to see something from him in the next book. I also hope that there will be a better and more cohesive connection between Damon and Penny. In this book she's a bit too antagonistic to rate her tender feelings as genuine and I'm hoping that this won't be the case in the next one. Damon deserves someone of his own, someone who not only understands him but loves him in spite of all he's done or will do.
♚I adored Damon. He was so incredibly sexy to me. He was cold, indifferent, and seemingly callous while at the same time, mostly in the quiet, he was sensitive, protective, thoughtful and loyal, especially towards Penny. I have no doubt that she has owned his heart for years and it was obvious in the little and big things he was willing to do to make her life easier.

Okay, so I think it’s obvious that Damon was the one to watch in this story. He was everything to me. He made this story worth reading, in my opinion. Warren gave us a character that demanded attention and I couldn’t look away. I was captivated from the first page until the last and can’t wait to get started on The Queen just to see where the author is going to take us with these characters and I’m interested to see if they’ll be granted a happily ever after together.

descriptionAll the books in this series are similar so basically the same comments apply. They are always a fantastic representation of the story found within. The author has a theme that continues through both series. So that creates a nice unity. The typography is eye-catching and interesting. That said it loses a star for the author's name being larger than the title.description

descriptionHmmm...I am trying to put my thoughts into words on how I felt about this one. I enjoyed it A LOT there is no doubt about that, but I also felt a little bit disappointed with the lack of connection I felt between this couple. Or maybe it was more the lack of intimacy. I'll explain more in a bit.

So, let us start with the good stuff. This author certainly knows how to spin a good tale. The writing was fantastic. The pace was excellent. I never grew bored or felt the need to skim. There was plenty of angst. No OW/OM drama. All wrapped up in a nifty little cliffy that will surely have you dying to get your hands on book two.

So what didn't work for me? And I am not even sure I would say it didn't work so much as I felt something was missing. There is no sex in this book at all. Just a kiss. Now I get that the heroine is only 15, and I don't know if I forgot or it was never mentioned, but I was a bit taken back by how young she was. For some reason, I thought she was older when
Johnathon Scott attacked her
. I also thought Damon was older (he is only 25). In any case, because of her age, I guess I shouldn't have expected full-on erotica, but it did hinder me feeling a fuller connection between these two. On top of that, I don't feel like I got to know Damon very well. Or at least not much more about him than I already knew from reading the ENDGAME series. Actually, now that I think back on what I just read I realize that these two spend VERY little actual time in each others company with Penny's history taking up the majority of the pages.

But like I said I still found myself sucked into the story and I am hoping that a lot of the things that bothered me about this one will be worked out in the second book (fingers crossed). This still earns a two thumbs up from yours truly.description
