I first read this book the summer after 8th grade when I was severely depressed and suicidal. It gave me hope for the future and I ended up taking a picture of the last page and hanging it on my wall to remind me that life has its ups and downs, and when things are down we just need to white-knuckle it until the good times come around again.
I recently re-read it, and am still blown away how well the author portrays some darker feelings, but in a way that wasn't depressing in and of itself; I found this book to be inspirational in a natural, intuitive way.
P.S. look for the maple leaf in every scene!

Re-read countless times, perfection in a picture book.
While the art has a bit of a 90's Dave McKean feeling to it (usually not a good thing to me), I found this to be a heart-achingly beautiful book. Despair and hope may seem like topics too serious to address in a picture book, but I think it's wonderful- assuring kids that those are normal feelings. I like picture books that give children some credit, in terms of complexity of feelings.

Shaun Tans illustrationer är så fantasifulla och vackra, jag älskar dem! Kanske hade jag älskat historien ännu mer om jag inte läst boken på jobbet (vilket innebar flera avbrott i läsningen), men uppskattade den ändå mycket!
