Having never read a Fear Street story in my life (but loving the movies Netflix put out), I wanted to know what I missed growing up. And while this story is on the "newer" end of the series, it inspired me to consider visiting the older novels.
I did not think I was going to binge read the entire thing in three hours but here I am.
4/5 stars just because the ending is really rushed and I felt like there was a missed opportunity for one of Stine's classic twist endings.
So there is magic in this as the Fear family can cast spells, and this magic does play a pretty big role in both the past and present stories. I wish I knew that going in because wow was it fun to read about. It is a Stine book so you aren't going to get like heavy complex characters because he is better with plot than characters, but still I liked the bits of characters we do see. I also really liked the narration of the story, like the characters were telling us the story directly.
I was NOT expecting to like this as much as I did, but once the twists start coming I just had to keep reading and before I knew it I was done. Definitely check this out if you want a quick and fun spooky book! I already kinda wanna re-read it to see if I missed on any foreshadowing lol

really around 3.5
good, not great. I love R.L. Stine, but this is definitely not on par with Goosebumps imo. I enjoyed the plot, although I feel like the magic involved wasn't nearly included enough. wasn't really a fan of Marissa - she was really accusatory and mean to Harmony. I liked Harmony for the most part; there were times when she grated on me. some of the dialogue seemed very ... not realistic? The first part that took place in 1924 was the best part for me - that was so well done, so I guess in comparison, Harmony's portion kind of fell flat. But, I enjoyed the mystery and I liked

Spoiler
the reveal of Rebecca and Ruth-Ann being "stuck" instead of dead as well as Harmony having to go back to 1924
I will never get tired of Stine’s writing. Whether it’s Fear Street or Goosebumps, I just can’t get enough of it! I was thrilled when I saw this new series and I knew I had to get my hands on it. And of course it did not disappoint in classic Stine fashion. I loved this story so much, it had me wrapped around its finger and I’m not mad about it! It’s entertaining and fun with a spooky twist which is exactly what I was hoping it would be. I was worried I wouldn’t enjoy it as much as older Stine novels but it most definitely holds up to his other works and I can’t wait to continue with the series!
Trigger warnings: death, murder, serious physical injury, blood, disappearance of a sibling.
Look, I strongly suspect that a big part of the problem here is that I'm not even remotely the target audience for this book. But at the same time, this was just sort of aggressively mediocre. There's insufficient...worldbuilding, I guess??...around the witchcraft that the Fear family can do. There's insufficient character development for me to actually give a crap about any of the characters. And there's a whole lot of very random stuff just thrown into the story with no explanation.
So, like, it was okay? But that was as good as it got for me. At least the cover is fabulous??

You May Now Kill the Bride follows two sets of two sisters from the same family with parallel stories over 90 years apart. In 1924, Ruth-Ann is sick of living in her sister's shadow. Perfect Rebecca can do no wrong in their parents' eyes, and is one of the popular girls in the town, poised to get married to the boy her father has picked out for her and live a rich fulfilled life. But when Rebecca decides to rebel against her father's wishes and betrays Ruth-Ann, the scorned younger sister is determined to make her pay. But at what cost?
In the modern day, Harmony and her family are preparing for sister Marissa's big day. She's marrying childhood sweetheart Doug and everyone couldn't be more excited. Sure, Harmony and Marissa haven't exactly been close the past year, but she wouldn't wish her sister any harm, would she? The night before the big day, strange events start happening, and the family starts to worry that the urban myth of the Fear family curse is true. Just what exactly is going on? And will Marissa make it down the aisle in one piece?
Obviously, R L Stine is very nostalgic to me as I grew up reading Goosebumps and some of his other works. I didn't read any of the Fear Street series, but I figured why not give some of his newer stuff a go. This was kinda disappointing for me. I have those treasured memories of the books I read growing up, and this book was nothing like them.
It started off really strong for me. I was enjoying Ruth-Ann's story, and if the whole book could have been just her story, but gone into more detail, I would have rated this at least 4 stars. I just didn't like any of Harmony's story and I feel like there were a lot of elements that could have been explored more but were just kinda thrown in and forgotten about. For example, Very disappointing!
Overall, not a great book and I won't be reading any more in this series.

the witchcraft and the curse between the two families, and even the Goode family themselves! Where did they disappear to? I was waiting for a reveal that Aiden was part of the Goode family, but it never came!Overall, not a great book and I won't be reading any more in this series.
I was really hoping the twist was going to be Marissa running off with Nikki and was incredibly disappointed

I listened to the audiobook for this from the local library. I LOVED Fear Street books as a kid. I could devour one in an hour, they were so good.
This one started solid. The first pair of Fear sisters is pretty excellent. It's a tight story, told with clean narration, and a solid plot. It's the last two thirds that disappointed.
I found Harmony an annoyance. Like, I get she's self-absorbed, but this catastrophic thing happens. It's totally an accident, yes, but Harmony's sister is justifiably angry. She's allowed to be angry, and Harmony gets upset because it's only been a week and her sister hasn't forgiven her yet.
Then the ending relies on a crutch ending that always disappoints me. It reminds me of the The Toledo War. That book had a solid first 2/3, but then the author didn't know how to get out of the bind they'd written themselves into.
I finished it, but it wasn't a satisfying ending.
