The Fishermen

4.22 AVERAGE

This is the second book of the Infidelity series, and in my opinion must be read after The Good Liar in order to fully understand and appreciate the story. As the series title implies, there is cheating in this book.

We first met Leland as Cole's assistant and best friend and Franklin as Cole and Jasper's father in The Good Liar. This story begins before the events of The Good Liar, and Leland and Franky meet by chance as vulnerable and broken people. Neither of them is seeking a serious relationship, and yet feelings begin to get involved anyway...

I knew I was going to love this book, but I completely underestimated how much. I can count on one hand how many books I've read that have made me cry, and this is absolutely one of them.

***ARC Review***

This is my honest and voluntary review for the ARC I received.

When I heard who the next couple in the series was going to be, I wondered how Harris was going to set up their meet cute. She absolutely delivered in this book. Part One sets the reader up for a devastating moment. Even though you know it’s eventually coming, you find yourself hoping it doesn’t, and when the moment comes, oh my gah the angst! This is Harris at her finest. Her writing is supreme and the emotions in the book are palpable and visceral. Leland and Franky are unexpectedly compatible as lovers and partners. I adored everything about their relationship, (some of you may not like the infidelity aspect, but there is no cheating between the actual MCs). Both books in this series are outstanding so far; I would definitely read more books in this series.

We get moments of Cole and Jasper from book one. We get so much insight into how Franky thinks and how he feels about his marriage and his family. There’s some heartbreaking context to Leland’s background story as well. The spice in this novel is next level. It’s primal, possessive, and passionate. They have some explosively carnal moments. It’s too hot to handle for Lucas. IYKYK. Leland and Franklin as a couple have off the charts chemistry. Every scene is tinged with their desire, even in the moments they can’t have one another.

I was happy to see that both Franklin and Leland take the time they need to heal and grow, at their respective paces of course. I often think about Harris’ books long after I’ve read them. The Fishermen won’t be an exception. I cannot wait to see what else Harris comes up with next. I’m sure it will be as wildly good as her other body of work.

Note: Take a look at the Author’s Note at the beginning of the book for any potential triggers.

Long story short. Two men had sex and fell in love. One was separated from her wife but then she was ill and he left the guy he loved and having sex with. I didn't like his character truthfully. He was a coward. Leland deserved better. However, the book stuck to its title. If you are not into MCs having sex with others after falling for each other this book is not for you.

The story of Frankie and Leland is complicated, messy, but ultimately beautiful. There's pain and heartbreak, but in the end, so much love that they both deserve. Franklin is really reminiscent of Jasper in The Good Liar with his martyr-like ways. I felt Leland's pain in the scene where Franklin abandons him. It made me hate Franklin a bit in his treatment of Leland. They are both such complex characters, and C.P. Harris did such a great job in portraying them. They aren't necessarily loveable, but not worth hating. They are both real, with real emotions and human actions. And as with any C.P. Harris book, they both have a lot of possessive/obsessive energy, but not quite as intense as The Good Liar or Bad Wrong Things. I liked getting an inside look into Franklin after meeting him in The Good Liar. There was some overlap, as well as a bit of going back in time to when Franklin and Leland met. I really enjoyed how this story was done. The writing is great, the characters are so well written, and the story kept me hooked the whole time. And we can not forget the spice: over the top, but so so good. Definitely a great read for me overall

I love franky and Leland but just not as much as I loved Jasper and Cole so they couldn’t out rank them

No... just no...

After finishing [b:The Good Liar|77265775|The Good Liar (Infidelity #1)|C.P. Harris|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1674822913l/77265775._SY75_.jpg|102481804], I was sooooo excited to read Leland and Franklin's story! Then I was apprehensive when I read a teaser and the passage on it was JUST.NOT.MY.TEA. Like so much not my tea!! So there I was starting this already skeptical about how much I was going to enjoy it.

I never understood why Leland was so fixated in the beginning with Franklin (I mean when he was a waiter in that catering thing). What draw him to him? Why follow him up the staircase? The reasons were flimsy at best, so that was another notch into the "yeah I'm not sure about this story" going round and round in my head.

I never knew what to think about Leland's art... was he good or not? Was he an untrained artistic genious? I DO NOT KNOW!! It was a mess throughout the story!

Then it was the sex between them... hot at times but 70%, for me, it was... icky...? I love, Love, LOVE me some good, kinky, rough sex filled with dirty talk but I'm not sure I got that here. It felt that I got some cheesy, OTT p0rn style, rough sex and weird, cringey dirty talk...

And then we were endlessly told about things.... their feelings, their days, their musings... it was LoooooooOOOOONG. So, so long! There was no ending the first part. Then the second part was the angst. They hurt themselves, they hurt each other, they hurt others... round and round it went with their remorse, their anger, their possessiveness, their revenge, their guilt, their lies... and nothing, no steps taken, no gestures made to actually fix themselves and oh how Franklin frustrated me when it came to Cole!

At some point Franklin wears his big boy pants and starts with fixing himself, something that Leland left till the freaking end and that was summed up in the epilogue.

Ugghh do I want to go into the whole martyr thing and Leland testing Franklin? Nuuuhhh.... Because this review will never end.

Both of them DO NOT deserve Cole! I mean couldn't Leland tell him about his mother? What exactly he would have revealed that had to do with his father?

Finally I want to address something when it comes to C.P. Harris's writing style.... maybe it's a personal preference, for me, maybe it's because english is my 2nd language and I'm not familiar 100% with the rules.... so when you are talking about the "crotch" or the groin, do you really need to add the word "area"??? Isn't it implied? So yeah reading "crotch area" and "groin area" through me off completely.

So anyways... the story felt endless and frustrated me and I'm questioning things...

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
