I keep coming back to this compilation again and again. I first read it in high school - I studied and presented a couple poems in speech class - and now it's forever on my bedside table. Just open to a random page when you need something but you're not sure what, and you'll get something out of it.

I received this book as a gift in college. I had read some of the poems, but I never got through the entire collection, until now.
In this book, Garrison Keillor has compiled an anthology of some of the best poems ever written. There are several chapters that organize the poems into different categories, like: failure, lovers, sons and daughters, and many more. Garrison Keillor writes an introduction that explores why he chose they poems he did, and why poetry is so important.
If you are looking to dip your feet into poetry, or you are looking for an anthology to expose yourself to a wide variety of poets, this book is incredibly done and has a collection of poetry that just may change your life.

wasn't really a fan of this collection, tbh. i've been really struggling to find contemporary poets that i enjoy. but also there were some additions to this book that i don't feel were poetry. but not in a i'm-a-poetry-snob kind of way. like they were excerpts from books. for example, the first paragraph of moby dick was just... there.

Keillor's anthology is nothing more than what it claims to be, a bunch of good poems. He doesn't have much of a thesis here; he's not setting out to educate or provide a survey of any poetic style. He just set out to collect the poems he thought captured those certain ineffable moments we all experience as human beings. Those moments that make us human and remind us we are alive. There are a lot of excellent selections here.

Some pretty good poems, some not so good. But definitely worth if for the introduction.

"This is not Introduction to Poetry (MWF 9am
Chemistry 150, 3 cr) and I am not the Maud Hill
Hallowell Professor of American Lit, and your name
isn't Daphne Foxcroft. It's simply a book of poems...
that somehow stuck with me...." from Keillor's intro
to this book. Recommended.
