Out of this wood do not desire to go:
Thou shalt remain here, whether thou wilt or no.
-A Midsummer Night's Dream, Shakespeare
I thought the story of Tristran and Yvaine was enchanting. Is the book involved and complicated? No, but there is magic in the simplicity or would that be simplicity in the magic? Either way it's a wonderful story that intertwines the ordinary with the fantastical. Maybe that is why I thought of Shakespeare. I would love to lay my hands on the book with Charles Vess' illustrations.

I loved the movie, and I wish I had known at the time it came out that this book existed. I think the movie ruined the book for me, almost. There are enough different things that I found myself missing when they weren't part of the original work.
However, trying to forget the movie, this book is still wonderfully whimsical (helped along by the fact that I listened to the audiobook read by Neil Gaiman himself). I love the romance that is innocent and pure, yet unlike most romantic novels.

I enjoyed this book even though I watched the movie first. There are a couple of descriptive sexual scenes, so probably not appropriate for children.
Moderate: Sexual content
Well... the movie was better than the book. That doesn't happen very often at all.

“He imagined he could see the very faces of the stars; pale, they were, and smiling gently, as if they had spent so much time above the world, watching the scrambling joy and he pain of people below them, that they could not help being amused every time another little human believed itself the center of its world, as each of us does.”

whimsical and perfect! a children’s story reimagined to adults who never quite grew up.

I read this book a few years back and remembered it being fine but nothing extraordinary. I was reminded of this while reading it again. The story could be considered fun and something akin to a fairytale you might tell a child in the fact that scenes don’t go on for too long, character development happens suddenly, and you don’t really get into the backstory of the characters too much. The lack of expansion on different aspects of the world and the characters themselves made me disappointed. The romance between the two main characters also doesn’t have any build up. Just towards the end of the book the main girl is like “Okay I guess I love him and we’ll be together forever”. It didn’t feel real or believable. Overall I would give it 2.5 stars, not worth the reread.
