I've only ever read All we ever wanted (Can't be bothered to link it) by this author and was really excited to read this but damn this was so meh!
I mean Cecily our female MC literally can't survive 2 seconds without a man. Invites a complete stranger back to her apartment and crosses her fingers that he's not from Ted Bundy's bloodline. Who raised this girl?!!!

Grant our potential serial killer is a cheater but don't worry he's gorgeous I wont say more about that.

This book was just disappointing really. Smh

2.5 stars.

Outstanding!!!!! Highly recommend!

TW - connection to 9/11

Lots of twists in this story - sometimes when you least expect it. A lot of emotional issues too.

Lots of great storylines that I can easily envision.

I couldn’t stop reading the book but it’s a 4 because of the super emotional parts.

A perfect beach-read for a relaxing afternoon. I enjoy Emily Giffin's writing and storytelling style. Simple, rom-com style books with lovable characters, a feel of summers in New York, and moments that you could almost picture as a movie as you're reading it. I felt this way with "The Lies That Bind" in its fairly predictable, but enjoyable style. I found myself cheering on the main character Cecily as she was reeling after a breakup. I could relate with her wanting to call her ex, waiting to see if he had called her....wondering what he was thinking about her....and also the giddy feelings of falling in love with a new love interest. I almost felt those giddy, twitter pated feelings she experienced as she fell in love with. But with events of September 11th turning her world upside down what was next for her? What about the new love interest, who might have been living a double life. Cecily's life is now even more complicated as she navigates the historical events surrounding 9/11 in addition to a tumultuous love triangle. Ultimately being faced with life changing events herself.

I enjoyed the lighthearted, mostly clean book. A great escape for a beautiful spring day (even if I am stuck at home during the COVID19 pandemic......)

(I receive an Advanced Readers Copy of this book from #NetGalley in exchange for my honest review of the book)

What in the world did I just read? I went back and forth for so long on how to rate this but.. 2.5⭐️

On one hand, I loved the anticipation and the not knowing.. Grant and Cecily's romance was really fast but also so beautiful. The first 40% I was sure I was going to give this 5⭐️ But I’m learning if something is too good to be true then it usually is.

Which brings me to the other hand.. I am so beyond confused as to what I just read because the plot was all over the place. I loved the beginning but everything moved SOO FAST after that. Time also jumps around a lot! It was hard to keep up. Between Grant and Matthew, the surprises along the way, and that ending.. what in the heck?!

I love Emily Griffin but did not particularly care for this story or the characters. I give it 3 stars because it was actually a very quick read, which I guess means it was engaging… but I didn’t root for anyone, not ONE character. They were all ridiculous. The only thing I enjoyed was the Ethan/Darcy/Rachel appearance.

Really unique and interesting plot about a woman, Cecily, who meets a guy, Grant, at a bar late at night. They hit it off, they have a fling, and he disappears in the tragedy of 9/11. She comes to realize she’s not the only one looking for him - and what unfolds is pretty unpredictable!

*Thanks to Random House/Ballantine Books + NetGalley for the ARC!*

I love Emily's other books, so when I got this ARC, I dropped what I was doing to read it immediately. This is a book that pulls you in right off the bat and then doesn't let go!

Hiding the remainder of my thoughts to avoid spoilers.

SpoilerFirst of all, I was pleased with myself for noticing the date the story began - May 2001 - and immediately realizing that 9/11 would play some part in this story. I wasn't sure if we would see characters living through it or a time jump around it (because admittedly, I didn't even read the blurb, it's just a must read based on author alone!), but in the past I don't feel like I've been super observant of these things, so I was pleased that I noticed that detail.

Okay on to the book itself! I enjoyed all the references - AIM! Answering machines! Throwback songs! - I tend to be on the side of less pop culture references because they often feel forced, but in this case, they worked. I also loved the chemistry between Cecily and Grant. I've always been a when you know, you know person, so their fast pace felt weirdly realistic to me.

That said, the reveal to Amy (where Amy basically says she knew already what was going on and has very little reaction to the whole thing) alongside the reveal that Grant is still alive felt very WTF to me. And then that Cecily takes him back after everything felt really UGH. Like let's leave aside that he's a white collar criminal, leave out that he faked his death and didn't contact you, let's consider *only* that he cheated on his wife - that's enough. Don't take that man back!

5/5 readability - it's a page turner! - 4/5 for the ending. Will recommend!
