I'm going to be honest... I'm having an incredibly hard time reviewing this book. I've changed my star rating a few times because I really don't know how I feel.
I'll start with the good: I read this book in less than 24 hours. I absolutely flew through it. Giffin's writing is addicting and I was completely sucked in to the complete insanity of the story. (Sidenote: I realized this book was crazy when I started giving my husband a play-by-play and laughed my way through it.)
So now for the bad: Reading this book made me feel like I was rubbernecking in traffic past a horrific accident, so I think I maybe flew through it because it was a little bit of a dumpster fire? I had to know what was going to happen to all of these horrible people. It seems like the end was attempting to tie this book up with a bow but it's really difficult when I don't feel like a single character was the least bit redeemable.
I think we are supposed to be rooting for the main character, Cecily to end up with "the right guy" but she is so immature and seemingly incapable of making a selfless decision that I was hoping she would ditch both of the bozos and go off on her own to figure her shit out.
Grant is a world-class asshole who might be the only New Yorker to view 9/11 as exactly what he needed to get out of his marriage and the legal trouble he was in. While the people who loved him mourned the loss of their friend/husband/boyfriend he was off on an extended camping trip evading the feds.
And Matthew? I mean, he is as manipulative as they get. The thought alone of Cecily (as flawed as she is) ending up with this hoity-toity, pretentious jerk-off, made me keep turning the pages to make sure she made at least one good decision by kicking him to the curb.
Emily Giffin is a great author and I love what I have read of her previous work but this one has me very uncertain. Did I love this book? Hate it? Or was it so far-fetched that I didn't care and just kept reading to find out what could possibly happen next? It's strange how my complicated feelings will stick with me longer than a book I loved through and through.
(Hot Take: I will say I was I was confused by incredibly off-putting use of 9/11 as a way to move the plot of this book forward. It seemed a little careless of the author.)

A quick read but a disappointing one from an author I usually really enjoy. I really didn’t like the twist or the ending.
Definitely not one of my favorites. The "twists" were predictable, and the main character very unlikable.

I’m fluctuating between 2.5 and 3 stars, so 2.75 stars it is. I have several issues with this book, but I’ll just name one. Cecily brought a guy back to her apartment to spend the night with her even though he was a stranger that hadn’t even given his name, and the next morning she let him use her toothbrush!!!!!! I’ve known my husband for over 20 years, and I would never let him put my toothbrush in his mouth. I’m the book was all downhill from there.
there were 106 (one hundred and six!!!!!!) ellipses within 51 pages. that’s averaging over two a page. but in reality, you would get a miraculous three-page break before getting curbstomped by ten within four lines of dialogue. literally choose any other punctuation mark that denotes a pause.
emily giffin… i just have to ask… why… would you do… that…
