This books was pretty good. Definitely what I would expect from the ATLA universe. I really enjoyed how this worked through different aspects and issues compared to the TV show with a different type of Avatar Bender. While it's not a masterpiece, it touches greatly on what justice really means and that actions have consequences. Would definitely be a book I'd recommend to youth who enjoyed ATLA and want to dive farther into the universe.

I really liked Kyoshi's avatar journey in this novel.

This book really does boil down to be gay do crime. It had me CRYING and LAUGHING. Kept to the spirit of ATLA so well. It felt darker than Aang and Korra’s stories, definitely not PG. Ending felt a bit rushed, though the book was already pretty long we could have taken a little more time to flesh it out I think. Loved the cliffhanger though!! Kyoshi is such a compelling character I love her and just want her to be happy :’) tall gorl has had it tough.

Things I’m going to be picky about:
It’s not believable (to meeeeee!) that in the age of Kyoshi it was not widely known that lightning bending was a thing. Makes sense that a poor earth kingdom girl who never met a fire bender wouldn’t know. But her best friend is a fire academy headmistress’s daughter. You’re telling me most people didn’t know it was a thing just 2 avatar’s before Aang?
Also dust/mist stepping is so wack and just means basically everyone can fly now? Hate it lol.

First, I want to say this as a warning: This book contains violence and death. If you are a teen or a parent of a teen, please be aware of this. I would say it is heavier than ATLA was. I am an adult and I was surprised by what I read from this YA book. Maybe this is common for YA fiction now, but I was surprised by the body count.

Anyway ... this book wasn't what I expected, at all, but it was good, though I wasn't enamored with it until the last third of it or so. I think Kyoshi is different from the Avatars we have seen before, and that is very wonderful to read and think about. I enjoyed seeing how these different characteristics associated with her came to be so. And it was also interesting to see how the world existed generations before Aang and before the nations we see in ATLA.

*vague spoilers ahead*
I was disappointed in the ending to be honest. The person who steps in to help Kyoshi do the thing and then does it themself instead of her -- WHAT?! And then the cliffhanger ending -- WHAT?! I, like anyone else reading this book, would hope for a sequel, but I wish the ending of the first book wasn't predicated on setting up for one. <<"Hello, Kyoshi," says this person who appeared. "It's time for the next chapter of your training to begin.">> Could have sufficed for me in giving closure to the book while also leaving it open for next ones. Also, I saw at least two typos.

With all that said, I would recommend it, and I look forward to reading any sequels that come out.

The Rise of Kyoshi is an expansion to the Avatar the Last Airbender (ATLA) I did not know I needed.

Did you ever wondered why she had fans? Did you ever question the meaning behind her makeup? Have you ever wondered about her backstory?

Well listen up my friends, this novel covers all of that and SO MUCH MORE. Details into Kyoshi's life are woven into the story and lore of ATLA so well. I am absolutely amazed that small details, like the Beifong family, are pieced together with the plot so beautifully. All of the information surrounding Kyoshi and the path that shaped her can be seen in the ATLA series. I can not believe the incredible amount of decisive thought that went into this novel. All of these things made me gush with pride while I read.

This novel is absolute fan service in the best way possible. If you loved the original series, please take some time to read this book. You'll be so glad you did!

It is hard for me to overstate how much I love these novels. For anyone who is a fan of the original Avatar series, or anyone looking for a young adult book with exceptional writing and a badass female protagonist, this series is a no-brainer. Not to mention its inclusion of a no-fuss, no-tragedy, authentically written queer female romance, the kind of representation that can make such a positive difference in the lives of queer kids today.

HEATER. Loved it, it’s YA so it read quickly. 2nd and 3rd acts ripped, 1st was pretty good.
