I really enjoyed this book! The writing style and prose fits well with the ATLA world. I really liked the imagery the author used to describe emotions. I loved the way the world was expanded upon with the different places Kyoshi visited in the Earth Kingdom. From the very first page, her hometown of Yokoya took on a distinctive atmosphere. I wish there was a map at the front of the book; I think that would have been very helpful.
All of the characters were very well-written. The antagonist is painted in shades of grey, and the reader is made to care about characters who may not have very much screentime. I would say I would have liked a bit more development of the relationship between Rangi and Kyoshi. I feel like their arc sort of reaches a climax, but then I don't read many scenes of them interacting much in the latter half of the book, so it feels like there is not much payoff.
I really enjoyed Kyoshi as a protagonist and the way she handles the tumultuous events that are completely changing her life and entire world. I had so much fun rooting for her and seeing her train, fail, and succeed in moments of expressing amazing power. She is not just powerful in bending, but she also has great traits lending towards being a great leader. Her origin story is very interesting, and I am so excited to see where the next part of her journey takes me as a reader.

have you ever read the first few pages of a book and immediately knew you were going to love it?? that was my experience with this book. the rise of kyoshi is a masterpiece that made me feel alive. when i read this book, suddenly i didn't have a short attention span anymore. page after page gripped me and i JUST COULD NOT STOP READING.
avatar kyoshi was definitely one of the avatars i was most curious about when i watched avatar the last airbender and f.c. yee gave so much justice to her origin story. i can't wait to read more and see how the rest of her story pans out!!

a masterpiece!! this book is now one of my most favorite reads of all time.
I don’t write a lot of reviews on here, but if you enjoy the Avatar series in any form this novel is a compelling and worthy addition to the universe. I was on the edge of my seat throughout and Kyoshi has quickly become a contender for my favorite Avatar!

This is my second read. Last time I read this was 2019!! Insane. I love this book just as much as I did years ago. Rangshi <3 . Literally Bodyguard by Beyoncé. Kuruk is always dragged to filth, love that. I forgot what a fuckboi he was.Yun was annoying acell to me, what a great character death. May he rest in peace tho 🛐 We need more stories about seven-feet-tall sapphics with their short gfs! Can’t wait to finally read The Shadow of Kyoshi.

Moderate: Child abuse, Blood, Abandonment, Classism
This book proves just how much of his power Aang would be holding back in his eventual fight with Firelord Ozai. Avatar Kyoshi has no such compunction; she is a nuclear bomb with a vendetta. This book was definitely written for the now-adults that watched Avatar: The Last Airbender as kids and teens, because it does not hold back or hide behind metaphors for death the way the show did.
