I loved this book! I can’t wait to start reading the second! I’m so curious on how things are going to play out for Kyoshi! I think the pacing of the book was well done.

this was so good i rlly did not expect to like it this much. also i knew kyoshi was bi but i didn't know this had a SAPPHIC ROMANCE?! lov me sum surprise gayness <3 anyways kyoshi is the baddest bitch to ever exist & this book was great & really felt like an avatar story (if dat makes sense?) so yes read if you love atla/tlok you will not be disappointed. & yes we Shall be picking up the next book soon
3.75 stars but purposely rounding to 4
i enjoyed every moment of reading this but when i look back on it, it actually has some elements that would normally turn me off of a book and i wonder if i would have been as engaged if this wasn't a prequel to ATLA. even so, it's an incredibly fun look at kyoshi before she became the renowned avatar fans know her to be. i really liked the setting of a world still reeling from the aftereffects of a massacre that has left everyone desperate for an avatar to restore balance and maintain peace. the fact that the avatar's identity was in the air after having not been reborn immediately made for a fascinating starting point for kyoshi's story and i loved seeing it unfold.
some of my favourite lines came from kyoshi's relationships with rangi and kelsang. my top 2:
"the avatar can be reborn. but you can't, kyoshi. i don't want to give you up to the next generation."
"for her, he was the biggest, fastest, best kite in the whole world"
as for my mini-gripes, the main one is how the two big fights at the end felt very rushed and made for a bit of an underwhelming climax/ending. especially considering how leisurely the pace was for the first third or half of the book, the results of both fights felt...unearned? they were satisfying in certain ways but it felt like yee was trying to wrap up everything quickly and introduce a new focus for the next book when there was still so much that could have happened. the plot as a whole meandered quite a bit once kyoshi met the flying opera company.
also this is minor but i just hate it when characters are always screaming and they even screamed in all caps here and it usually reads very childishly to me, PERSONALLY, but for some reason it didn't annoy me that much this time. the power of kyoshi i guess!
so yeah a lot of things felt too easy and the plot wasn't as tight as i liked and the characters screamed a lot but somehow i still feel inclined to round this up to 4 stars for the sheer enjoyment of reading it.
