I love the world of Avatar and this was fun to explore! Really love Kyoshi and her companions!
LOVE
I love the Avatar series, and Kyoshi was already a favorite of mine from the show. I look forward to reading more. It should be noted as well that I'm an adult. I've discovered and watched/read the Avatar series all since college 6 years ago. This story is for everyone!

Honestly I loved it. I've been craving more Avatar content and this definitely delivered. Good character arcs, really interesting villain, fantastic plot, good/decent prose (for YA) and overall just a ton of fun.

It's always a pleasure to visit new stories in the world of Avatar but it's also always disappointing when the content hasn't been created by Bryke. The written word is not the correct medium for this story and I think I might have liked it a lot more had it been animated or illustrated.
Kyoshi is known (and beloved) in the fandom as someone who is so sure of herself, who understand what needs to be done. Only justice will bring peace. Here we meet a confused girl, overwhelmed by everything around her. It's not necessarily a bad starting place for the Avatar we have come to love but it is strange given her Earth Kingdom background.
I loved the idea of Team Avatar. Ragtag, morally gray, and very much the underdogs. It played nicely when compared to how Aang's Team Avatar was also not revered masters and great leaders, just a couple of bad bitches from around the world. But unfortunately, Kyoshi's Team Avatar isn't well developed. The ideas of who they're supposed to be are cool as hell but they're not fleshed out and that makes it difficult to care for them even amidst great tragedies that befall them.
The story is also unnecessarily long. I feel it could have been edited better and been shorter.
But! But of course, I'm going to read the second part. I love Kyoshi, I love how gay she is, I love knowing the origins of her iconic outfit, and I can't wait for her to transform into the Avatar I was introduced to in The Last Airbender.

Perhaps I’m the wrong age demographic because I think it could have been better. But, I really liked the characters! I just wasn’t wrapped into the world like I’d hoped that I would be.
I hope they make a cartoon of it though! I’d still watch it.

WOW. I loved Kyoshi’s arc in this book. Also, excellent found family trope, with some slight (sapphic) romance, and plenty of feminine rage. This was a fantastic read.
