Here I thought I was experiencing a reading slump but apparently no THAT IS NOT THE CASE. AAAAAAAAAAA!!!
Ok look. I’ve never watched A:tLA or read anything in the canon (or on the outskirts of it for that matter) before and knew diddly squat about the whole thing / only had some dim notions of some basic concepts and ideas in the series I’d picked up somewhere or other, and I honestly can’t tell if I missed some crucial points because of that, but all I can say is that it doesn’t feel like I was lacking anything AT ALL in terms of being fully able to enjoy and absorb the world and the characters and the story and all its eccentricities and unique traits and politics (and ramble several-row sentences about it!) and and and ... anything!! Put another way: although I have no reference points with which to make any comparisons, I don’t feel like this huge atla-sized gap in my knowledge mattered. I can only make guesses at whether this book was just so well written that it shines as a perfectly functioning first part of a duology on it’s own, too, as it obviously does as an anticipated and longed-for prequel/addition to the wider universe. From my perspective everything was very subtly yet effectively explained or hinted at for me to quite easily get the gist of it AND to make me feel very much at home in this world from page one. I can’t even begin to analyze or explain any further and I don’t care if some aspects of it weren’t perfectly balanced or developed or whatever. As per usual, I just care about what my reading experience FELT like. Which was that I can definitely say that this is one of the most devourable books I’ve read in MY LIFE.
To summarize: I had zero problems feeling this one hundred percent right from the start. I loved Kyoshi and Rangi (and Pengpeng! :D) instantly. The pacing was perfect throughout. The plot literally swept me off my feet and kept me glued to this book for every minute I could spare in the last few days. Having to put it down for shortish periods of time in between plunging head first into and gliding along it with such speed was almost painful. THIS IS WHAT READING FICTION SHOULD ALWAYS FEEL LIKE. SOOOO GOOOOD and sad yet fun yet profound and somehow solemn and BADASS and I can’t wait for more! What an amazing ride <3

This was a wonderful read. The author’s writing style and vocabulary is impressive and certainly surpasses expectations for any novel—young adult or not. The author knows how to tell a story and doesn’t fall into any formulaic pitfalls that you might think can occur with adaptations or prequels. The character Kyoshi is written so well as she develops from servant to avatar throughout the novel. Her relationship with Rangi is just perfect.
“As much as Kyoshi wanted to stay with her, in a single, frozen pool of moments, the current carrying them forward was too strong.”
