Not knowing about Duchess beforehand may be the only reason why I finished this book because the phenomenon of people following a fictional character and thinking of them as a friend or oracle is fascinating and frightening. But I do not find anything she says to be deep or smart or worth exploring - Duchess or the author. The latter does not come across as likable or kind and I am going to be forever puzzled why Lyle Lovett is such a fan.
Probably more interesting to those who followed Goldblatt on twitter. This memoir suffered from incomplete sketches of the narrator, her family, and circumstances. Never really felt connected. There was this underlying tone of self-righteousness. “Look at all the terrible things that happened to me but I am this brilliant writer and supreme ethical being.” I found it lacking.

Totally not what I expected! It’s probably the funniest yet saddest memoir I’ve ever read. If you’ve never heard of the good Duchess (or even if you have) you MUST read this book.

Such witty & powerful writing. I immediately bought it after I read it for the first time. This is a book for reflection.
I'm not usually a fan of memoir, but this was a unique approach to the medium. Great writing, compelling and tragic, flecked with bouts of beauty.

***I received the kindle edition of Becoming Duchess Goldblatt (Advanced Reader Copy) for free from Goodreads Giveaways***
I hadn't heard of Duchess Goldblatt, a fictional Twitter character, before reading, but I'm going to think about this memoir for a long time. The writing is beautiful and raw. The author, who remains anonymous, takes us through her divorce and the other losses that prompted her to create an online persona as well as how becoming Duchess changed her--or perhaps helped her become more herself.
Duchess's tweets are scattered throughout the book, which really helped me get a feel of the author and her persona, both of which are charming and witty. I kept laughing and sharing my favorite sections with friends.
Sometimes I felt like the organization could use some work, but that's the only nitpicky thing I can say. I truly, truly loved reading this memoir, and I hope the author writes more books. (I'm following Duchess Goldblatt on Twitter now too.)
