“Any asshole can make a mean joke. It’s harder work to reach out further for the joke that’s funny and can’t hurt anybody.”
― Duchess Goldblatt, Becoming Duchess Goldblatt

One of the greater finds on the Twitterverse is Duchess Goldblatt's account... and this quote is the exact reason why she was such a great find. She is witty, funny, and kind... something that is quite lacking in the Twitterverse.

This is a quick listen and it is just as fun as her twitter account... but it is more, it also has a bit of a memoir woven though. It makes you see the Duchess in a new light... a very lovely new light.

An enjoyable read although I think more die-hard fans of Duchess would get more from it. I only really know of Duchess Goldblatt in passing because I can’t bear to be on social media, and I honestly found her interactions on Twitter to be the least compelling part of the story. They made me a little uncomfortable and felt repetitive. Her friendship with Lyle Lovett was cute, but I didn’t find it terribly interesting. Really the parts I liked best were about her complicated family history and her life after divorce. I think it’s special that in her own despair, the author somehow created a character who could give other people the comfort they needed when they needed it most.

This book came highly recommended to me by a coworker from our ethics group and I had never heard of it, but this person is all kinds of cool, so I had to give it a listen. It was very good. I had no idea about Duchess Goldblatt, but I never took to twitter. I'm so glad to know of her now and all the people she helped pull through some dark times. I'm not a big fan of Lyle Lovett, but it was cool to watch their friendship grow throughout the book. This is the kind of book that should give a good dose of empathy for all human kind and let us know even through darkness you can find the light eventually.

Good message. I might have enjoyed it more if I was familiar with the character. The author is obsessed with Lyle Lovett, at some points, I wondered if she wrote a book just to brag about being friends with him, so that was a bit weird.
