This book had humor but it was hardly a comedy. The author had a series of heartbreaks to reckon with and her literary (Twitter) alter ego helped her disassociate from the pain. Her gracious, positive attitude--hard fought--was inspiring. And now I like Lyle Lovett too.
What a great listen! I’ve never heard of the Duchess before this. What a fascinating person and story. Would highly recommend it to anyone. A delight all around.
“Sometimes I tie your words in linen with a little lavender and mint and use them as a poultice for my weary old heart.”
I just finished Becoming Duchess Goldblatt. Closed the book with sigh and a smile – and a feeling like a hug, arms around myself.
This was a book recommendation in my online readers group. I’m quite sure I would never have picked it up on my own (it’s a memoir, a genre I usually avoid). Were it not for that community and their collective wisdom, I likely would have passed and it would have been my loss. It’s the most surprising, imaginative, oddly funny, soul-supporting book I’ve read in a long while. True, some of the early parts are distressing, seated in a dark place. And it took me a few pages to get captivated. But, about the time she makes her debut on twitter, I found myself invested. By the end it’s clear: becoming Duchess Goldblatt and providing loving support and good humor is the best way to create the kind of community we all long to be part of. I’m not sure how I missed this Twitter phenomenon, but I’m glad I now know (and follow).
Becoming Duchess Goldblatt is a book I will re-read and recommend. In fact, I’ve already bought several copies to gift to friends.

Beautifully written with such care and honesty...relatable and inspiring. A poignant story filled with wit, humor, heartbreak, wisdom, and love. From the first word to the very last, it's perfect; a masterpiece. Must read!
I loved this one! Lots of laughs while also telling a sobering story-of the author and also of the folks met through social media. Very telling about how impactful someone known only by their online persona can be. In this story that was used for good, but how easily could the reverse be/is true?

I loved this! It is so quirky and slyly-funny and improbable and almost impossible to believe - but beautifully written with a solid message. I have no idea how I stumbled on this one, but am so very glad I did :). Listened to it - narrator is fabulous.
This was a funny little book! On a whim one woman decided to create a fictional twitter account that ended up going viral. It started off as an escape for her during a tough time in her life (divorce) but she gains such a big following (including her music idol Lyle Lovett) that it turns into a passion project (and this book) inspiring people around the world. Nice to read about someone turning their quirky obsessions into a cult hit and having it lead to a real friendship with a celebrity they admire. An true example of anything is possible if you believe in it enough.
I loved, loved this book, but you have to understand the Duchess first. She is a fictional creation of an anonymous person on Twitter. But her Grace, Duchess Goldblatt, spreads love and laughter all over the universe. This clever person has befriended thousands (47.7 K) on Twitter just by being herself. Her Twitter friends like Lyle Lovett, Benjamin Dreyer and Elizabeth McCracken apparently encouraged her (remember she is anonymous) to write a book and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt published this summer. The Duchess is the perfect friend for these long days alone and her memoir is no different. This book is partly the story of a woman experiencing a huge loss and a joyful account of the Duchess's origins. I recommend the book and following @duchessgoldbat
