This book was…okay. Not really a fan of a white woman from Iowa writing about voodoo and its (closed) practices (or including the spell at the end of the book that has ethical concerns). It also paints all meds that treat mental illness in a bad light, which was another big issue I had with this book. There’s enough negative association with mental health meds out there that this book didn’t need to add to. The characters also made some questionable decisions
like going to question someone at their house alone who works with poison and then not only accepts an open container of water from them, but takes multiple sips from said container<\spoiler>.

It wasn’t an awful book and I didn’t hate it, but there were enough points that irked me to keep me from fully enjoying it. But it has kept me distracted during this flare. I don’t think I’d read more of this series and don’t see myself seeking out anything by this author in the future, but may not completely dismiss them either.

Really liked parts of the book, but after reading her other series (body reader) this didn’t quite hit the mark. Maybe it was the conjuring and mystic components.

I wasn't really sure how I was going to feel about this book. Anne Frasier really blew me away with the Detective Fontaine series, but this one with it's conjurer and mojos and spells... I was skeptical. Not going to lie.

However, I really like Elise as a character and I find her relatable. I love David too, even though I didn't think I would. Now I'm over here hoping these two take off on a romance throughout the series because I want them together as a couple so badly.

As Frasier has done in the past, I did not predict this ending. Without giving anything away, I was very surprised by what the killer was going to do to her final victim had Elise not shown up. It was creepy and morbid, but still a good story line.

As for the spell casting and conjuring, it did not overpower the book and I don't think it had a negative effect. I didn't understand much of the parts when I was reading them, but it didn't effect the case and the storyline.

Anne Frasier, I know you've already written this series but PLEASE put Elise and David together. I need it to happen.

4.5 I really enjoyed this book, it was different than "typical" murder mysteries in that an element of the story was about southern Gullah hoodoo witchery, embraced by the protagonist. Having visited historic Savannah for a week two months ago, I was very familiar with some of the setting, including the extraordinary Bonaventure Cemetery and even my favorite restaurant whilst there, Gryphon. There are three major storylines twisting and turning together in this book - the murders they were investigating (involving deaths that used a toxic found in puffer fish which renders its victims unable to more of feel, but able to hear and think), Elise's background and ancestry, and the mysteries surrounding Elise's new partner, ex-FBI agent David Gould. It was a fascinating story with a vibrant setting. I wish I had read this book before I went to Savannah because I would have checked out a few more of the places described in the book. Next time....

Southern charm at its worst

It is a great read. I enjoy the setting of the southern United States. Reading the descriptions reminded of my time Charleston. This book has a great premise. I think the VooDoo type practices are always intriguing.

More like a 3.5 star. It was an enjoyable listen, but I wasn't super engaged in it. The plot zagged when I though it would zig, so that was welcome. I'll definitely be moving onto the next book in the series.
