I had higher hopes for this book, because it promises all of Anne’s dreams to come true. She finally married Gilbert, becomes a mother, and builds her own home. But Anne felt like a minor character who only talks with other, more interesting characters like Captain Jim and Leslie. Anne feels so flat: she allows a few characters—including Gilbert—to make decisions without her because she is an “illogical woman,” and she she gives up her writing dream and allows a man to do it instead of her . I miss my more headstrong, imaginative Anne that we got to know throughout the series. She is not in this book.

I breezed through the previous for books in one go (the first one being a re-read, first time in English), but after 70 pages of this one, I was “over-Anned”. And I am so glad that I put it down and returned to it later, because while the first time I considered this one to be one of the weaker points in the series, the second time I fell in love. I am in a phase when I really enjoy nature descriptions and that Anne surely delivered.
The story we are following is mostly predictable, but I have to admit that the means that will get us there often surprise me, so I can’t complain about this at all (but it’s true that I generally don’t care about plot that much). It’s also interesting to follow the morals Montgomery is trying to pass on us, they are often very outdated, and I can’t agree with them, but they are giving the book a distinctive old feel and I like that. This book is very emotional (I can’t decide if it’s more emotional than the first one), I fell in love with all the side characters and I can’t wait for the next book in this series.
"...Mind you, I believe what I was brought up to believe. It saves a vast of bother - and back of it all, God is good. The trouble with Mr. Howard is that he's leetle TOO clever. He thinks that he's bound to live up to his cleverness, and that it's smarter to trash out some new way of getting to heaven than to go by the old track the common, ignorant folks is travelling. But he'll get there sometime all right, and then he'll laugh at himself."

L.M. Montgomery writes with the most beautiful prose. This is the first time I've read this book, though I've read Anne of Green Gables multiple times. You're almost reluctant as a reader to continue Anne's story because you know you'll be leaving the beloved Green Gables of Anne's magical childhood behind but each new character you're introduced to becomes another one you love and with this chapter of Anne's life you're transported to the seashore in the most lovely way.
5/10

Lovely and sweet with touches of sorrow, this was a delightful read and continuation of the Anne series.
L.M. Montgomery has such gorgeous lyrical prose. Her descriptions of nature are always beautiful. She is also very good at drawing unique, memorable characters. Captain Jim and Miss Cornelia are two such here, with their own identifiable quirks.
There were some parts that were stretched out just the slightest bit and I did find Leslie a bit too perfect, but overall this was very enjoyable.
A pleasure to read.
