While not the best instalment in the "Anne" series, this is a quiet, sweet novel that offers a satisfying snapshot of Anne and Gilbert's early married life. Montgomery successfully avoids the danger of penning a saccharine fairytale for these beloved characters by including several surprisingly dark and poignant sub-plots in the narrative. Anne's neighbours are eccentric and amusing, and the setting is beautiful; the combination of these features makes for an enjoyable reading experience. I would have liked to see more substantive interaction between Anne and Gilbert in this one, but at least they're together at last! I'd consider this book a "deep cut" for fans of the series, but certainly not an entry-point into it.
