This books has a lot of unexpected humor. You will find yourself laughing out loud. The books speaks to the journey of self-discovery that we all embark on when we find ourselves having to pivot.

3.5 really and it's a totally subjective starring of course. Things I really enjoyed: the specificity of the her world that kept making me think, yes I can see that, details I felt I'd seen in real life or could see. The mother, family, the interior life of the main character, the detailed and awkward housemate dynamics of a triad. The reason I didn't rate it higher had to do with my life stage. I was talking to a friend who also read it and we agreed that we're kind of over coming of age stories. If I had read it in my 20's, I think it would of been a 5 star review from me.

I wasn’t sure how I felt at first but after a hundred pages I started to really enjoy it and by the end I loved it!

I went into this with high expectations from reviews but wasn’t really sure what I was looking for. It was a quick read, held my interest and I had a heart for Maddie (Maame). It felt like a sadder version of Bridget Jones to me. Don’t expect it to be earth shattering but I enjoyed my time spent on it just fine. If you are 30 plus, the protagonist will come off as young and naive but I didn’t mind that.

A delightful story of family ties and challenges. Work, friendships, love life, mental health, race...they all combine to make an interesting story. It was a finalist for an Audie award in 2024.

3-3.5 stars

This review is more personal but all I can say I that this has to be the most meaningful book I’ve ever read as it relates to me and I to it (and Maddie and the author Jessica) in so many ways. I don’t think I could ever read another book that truly gets me and what I’ve gone through. This is what representation is about, even if that wasn’t this book’s main purpose.

I will forever appreciate it and am so glad I took a chance to read it!
