When a book is talked about so much, expectations become high. This book met those expectations as it is powerful and heartfelt. Maddie is the daughter of Ghanaians, living in London with her father. Her mother spends a year in Ghana, alternating with a year in London, having left Maddie to grow up quickly with a deep sense of responsibility. Maddie wants to move out and experience what other young women are experiencing. Depression, family and racial issues are all approached with honesty. I highly recommend this well written, emotional book. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.

This novel was difficult to process. The main character is depended on to take care of her sick father and to be the glue that holds together her father, mother, and brother. Maddie struggles with the weight of her responsibilities and how to become her own person.

Maddie’s evolution into adulthood and independence is beautiful and heartbreaking. Maddie slowly realizes how to be her own person and how to decide what is right and wrong for her.

lots of life lessons of a woman navigating her 20’s. Entertaining and fun

A compelling and heart wrenching narrative about navigating being the first born daughter and all the responsibilities that come with it (especially the ones you didn’t ask for). Maddie’s character is very relatable and it was the best journey to witness her find her footing in life and figure out what SHE wanted. I was reminded of the importance of honesty, and advocating for yourself.

This was the first audiobook I was able to handle and the narrator was awesome. Loved the character development.

This book was good but did not live up to the hype for me. I found Maddie quite immature (maybe that was the point?) and didn’t like most of the characters. The lengthy google searches just seemed dumb. The second half was much better though.
