Took a long time for me to finish because of a fantasy series induced reading slump but I am so happy I came back to this. I loved the story, I loved the characters, and I appreciated how raw and complex Maddie was as she grew into herself. I'm excited to check out more from this author.

This book. Wow. Wow. Wow. Where to even start? This book addressed important topics such as grief, mental health, racism and family duty in such a powerful way without ever feeling dense as it really did go down easy.

At times this book was darkly funny in a way I appreciated, but fair warning, it does get pretty bleak. Now, I love a “depressing” book, so that didn’t bother me, but fair warning to make sure you’re in a good place for this one.

I loved Maddie as a main character. She was relatable and endearing. I thought she was so well-developed and I really felt for her and wanted to give her a hug. She is in her mid-twenties but this really was a beautiful coming-of-age story.

I absolutely adored this book and can’t recommend it highly enough. Is it too early to say this will be a strong contender for favorites of the year?

4.5

really liked it. the protagonist was relatable, and the story was small enough in scope to feel realistic - just a girl in her 20s figuring out family, dating, work, etc. with the help of Google, two good friends, and a wildly UNhelpful mother. Several characters were far too expository and preachy, and several were too perfect to be believable. The end was a bit too tidy, but it was still within the realm of possibility so as not to seem - no lottery winnings or royal proposals. Overall, really really enjoyed it. And the audiobook reader was FANTASTIC. Highly recommend, a big part of why I liked it so much.

3.5 stars.

I really wavered between 3 and 4 stars. There were many things I liked about this book: well-developed family dynamics, great character development, complex emotions, a strong depiction of the struggles of a second-generation immigrant. However, I had a hard time getting into it. I found the beginning slow; it took me two tries before I finally got into the plot. Towards the end, I also found it to be a bit predictable in nature. The Google searches embedded in the storyline started out fun, but became repetitive. The writing felt very simplistic and as though it was trying to hit many themes at once.

Overall, though, I'd still recommend it. Just be prepared for a slow start.
