I kept waiting for this to ramp up, and while it kind of did, it never was engaging enough to excuse how long this is. The story is so slow and I liked the characters, but not enough that I wasn't forcing myself to finish this. I can appreciate a quiet story, but this was quiet and unfulfilling.
Meandering, atmospheric, and character-driven. Not your typical crime/mystery/thriller

I didn’t like this book at all - her other books went a lot faster, but for some reason I didn’t care about a former cop who now lives in Ireland. Just a mehhhh read for me.
Another entertaining story set in a very small town in Ireland
If you prefer Tana French's Dublin Murder Squad books to The Witch Elm, this might not be your cuppa. But if you don't mind slow pacing and in-depth exploration of life in a rural Irish town from the POV of an outsider with a secret, this is a very compelling read. I don't think our protagonist sounded particularly American, let alone Chicagoan, but it wasn't so bad that it took me out of the story. The conflict and drama was universal and well explored.
