overall i really enjoyed this! i really loved the strong friendship and bond between rose and lissa and enjoyed that their relationship is what forms the core of the story, rather than the romantic relationships (imo). this was definitely a really great introduction to the world and the characters, while also presumably setting up the conflict for the subsequent books! christian ozera supremacy !!

In the world of The Vampire Academy there are three types of vampires. The Moroi are mortal vampires with unbreakable bonds to the earth's magic. Moroi must be protected from the Strigoi, the second type of vampires. Strigoi are undead and evil. Their only desires are to kill or make more Strigoi by killing a Moroi or dhampir by draining their blood and replacing it with their own blood. Dhampirs guard the Moroi.

St. Vladimir's Academy teaches Moroi how to strenghten their bond with magic. Dhampirs are taught how to protect the Moroi.

Rose Hathaway is the main character, a dhampir that must protect her best friend, Lissa Dragomir, a royal Moroi. The first book opens with Rose and Lissa on the run from the school for two years, after a mysterious accident that killed Lissa's parents and brother left Rose and Lissa with a psychic bond. The bond allows Rose to "get into Lissa's head" and hear Lissa's thoughts and feelings. Rose and Lissa are caught by guardians from the school and brought back to finish their last year of schooling, which proves to be more difficult than it sounds because of strange behavior from Lissa, dead animals showing up in Rose's bed, and secrets no one would have guessed about that mysterious car accident.

But, if it's not the plot that gets you, it will be the characters. Rose is snarky, sarcastic, and smart. The reader can tell right away that she loves Lissa and has a good heart regardless of her demeanor.

Lissa Dragomir is quieter than Rose, but still a great person. She's sincere, polite, and pretty much the opposite of Rose. I love how they interact with each other. The fact that they are so different, yet best friends is really incredibly.

Aside from the two main characters, there is also Dimitri Belikov, Rose's Russian mentor. Rose and Dimitri have an instant connection. The tension in their attraction kept me reading just to see what would happen. Richelle Mead does a great job weaving a story line with Rose and Lissa, but also with Rose and Dimitri.

Lissa has her own man, another Royal Moroi named Christian Ozera. He's the male version of Rose and their dialogue is very entertaining. They become friends though eventually. Christian is ostrisized from other vampires because his parents became a Stigoi - willingly.

This is pretty much the gist. I recommend this to fans of The House of Night, Blue Bloods, Mortal Instruments, or any other YA Vampire book fan. The Vampire Academy series makes for an interesting, entertaining and lovable read. It's my favorite of all YA Vampire books.

I hope you like it as much as I did.

Quick and easy read. Not great, but not terrible. Something that doesn't require a ton of braincells (which is necessary at times).
