Read this 12 years ago for the first time and wasn’t sure I’d like it as much now. Still loved it!

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead is the first book in the series of six books. Rose Hathaway is a dhampir, a body guard for her best friend Vasilissa Dragomir, a Moroi vampire princess. They have a special bond, which you will read about throughout this book.

After running away from St. Vladimir's Academy, Lissa and Rose are found and brought back to the school that is more harmful to Lissa then the real world. They have to survive day to day life back in high school for Vampires.

Lissa and Rose are two completely different character's that have a rare bond. The bond is something no one knows about and they don't want anyone to find out because it is so rare.

Rose is a kickass character who is aggressive and stands up for what she believes in, which makes her an amazing character. There is so much about her that we learn in this book. She knows what she believes in and she fights for it.

This book was one of the first books I read as a teenager, and I love rereading it. It's one that gives mythology a new meaning.

i might be out of the majoirty who loved this or maybe i read it too late in life but i wasnt very impressed with this.

Complicated Review...

Was this a good story? Yes

Did it keep my attention? Sure

Do I want to read the rest of the series? Probably not

Why?
  • The story telling is a bit too juvenile for me. That's not a bad thing, I think I'm just too old.
  • The foreshadowing, analogous characters, tropes, etc. are a bit too obvious and heavy-handed for me. I need more intricacy, subtlety, and whatnot.
  • It's a bit Ick to read about high-school girls and their promiscuity and whatnot.

Good story. I can see why it became a tv show. Great book for a different audience, just not me.

A lot of reviewers called this book funny, but I didn't get any humor out of it. There's a lot of petty cattiness, slut-shaming, and gossip-mongering. The main character didn't come off as fun or snarky, she sounded like a much younger, more whinier person that she was. Rose's actions always felt forced and out of place. She'd start to do something that made sense in her position, and then would switch gears and do or say something that came off as completely counter-intuitive. The descriptions of both Rose's and Lissa's characters never meshed with their actions. Everything just felt forced and cringe-worthy. The action was slow and tedious. Maybe I'm just too old now for petty teenage books or maybe these characters just don't feel like actual people.

Considering I finished the book in two days, which means I could not put it down, I gave it 5 stars. I love Rose's character because she does what she wants and she cares passionately about some things and not at all about others. She reminded me a lot of myself in some ways and I love being able to relate to a character. I also liked seeing the relationship between her and Lissa. The way they know they will always be friends and how much they love each other and yet still have their disagreements and fights. I fell in love with Dmitri and Christian in two different ways and I loved that the author was able to make that happen. This was an easy read, with an interesting story, and I can't wait to start the next book in the series.

The true ~dichotomy of woman~ is reading Vampire Academy immediately after finishing The Secret History
