flannel + diner fries + ketchup + riverdale vibes but with vengeful anthropomorphic woodland critters
This novel is very much Watership Down meets the Most Dangerous game. I actually really enjoyed the characters as a whole and really enjoyed this book. I thought it was going to be more violent, or spooky than it was after I actually started it -- but that just may be what I get for not reading the book synopsis before beginning the novel.
Runnymeade was really relatable and I could vibe with Phineas - I think it would have been really cool to get more background on where they came from and what exactly they were. That would have been really nice. Overall though - I do recommend this book!

Did you ever want to read a book that Redwall meets the Purge? If so, then do I have a book for you!
The good: this book was very twisty and the tension throughout was pretty good. For the most part I thought the writing style was very good. This feels like a good critique of "classic" literature which is usually written by people who can be best described as "of their time" or at worst as garbage humans.
The bad: I was really surprised that this book was published in 2021 because it feels like the kind of book that would have been written 10-15 years ago. What if we take whimsical and magical creatures and make them all dark and edgy? It just feels old hack at this point. I also got annoyed at the umpteenth time that a creature or human magically survived their wounds to get up and fight again. Both humans and creatures also have superhuman strength. I almost expected all of this to be the protagonists dream because it felt so unreal. It also suffered a little bit from telling and not showing.
Overall, I'd like to file this one as "not for me."
Content warnings: violence and self-harm

4/5 story
4/5 worldbuilding
But this book suffers from being too long by a third, and the author's overindulgence in the word "filigree".

I picked up this book because I follow the author on social media and think he's hilarious, but nothing could have prepared me for how unfunny, magical, and dark this story was. I loved every second. The writing is stellar and it's not like anything I've read before. I really enjoyed this one and I'll be thinking about it for a while.
It was kind of neither here nor there for me. I did like it a lot, but the language was very pretentious and I think a little too heavy on the similes. Really great premise but I think it was not executed in the way I would have done it and just a bit weird on the length/pacing. Not actually very scary to me, much more of a thriller than a horror novel.

What the fuck did I just read?
Would 100% go to a feast on an island with friends and strangers to celebrate my favorite book. What could possibly go wrong?

I started this book and almost DNFed it. Yet, I’m giving it 5 stars.
The beginning was a tad wordy for my liking and focused a lot on world building. So much that I was truly dissatisfied. I almost gave up but I pushed on— and I’m glad I did.
Durham’s imagination has to be wild because this is the most original story I’ve read in quite some time. It is dark in all the right ways.
Once the action starts, it doesn’t stop and it keeps you on your toes.
My absolute favorite thing about this book is the character development. We see the main character change in so many ways from beginning to end. Also, you empathize with ALL the characters.
While the beginning was wordy (to me), I feel that the author’s prose was beautiful.
I absolutely recommend for lovers of all things dark.
