original story

Thought provoking, well told tale. Grisly and suspense filled.
A very different fantasy. I loved it. Twists and turns throughout

Was recommended by a colleague. I saw a review that mentioned if the movie Watership Down had traumatized you as a kid, that this book could traumatize you as an adult. While I think the premise was interesting: I had mixed feelings overall some parts were brilliant, and others dragged out unnecessarily and I feel it could have benefitted by being a short story: it almost had a ring of Black Beauty to it, but if the animal characters had a chance for revenge.

I didn't realize when I started this book that the author, Jonathan Edward Durham, is responsible for a lot of funny, smart, and relatable tweets that I often see pop up on instagram. When I realized that, I felt equal parts of "that makes sense" and disappointment. Durham is still whipsmart in this novel, but he's also long-winded, which made me wish he'd written a book as tight as his tweets. It felt unnecessarily long, and every time the protagonist (spoiler!!!) was thisclose to death and had accepted it and was ready to go, he was saved at the last minute. This happened more than three times, and each fakeout made me care less and less about what happened to any of the characters.

I also had guessed a few events early on in the novel, so I didn't feel like this was anything particularly new. That said, I do think this would make for a pretty great movie, without having to read about all the mechanics of human and animal movement involved in the events that unfold.

Campy fairytale horror with a fun premise. I found it a little pretentious at times.

Interesting premise, some exciting bits, some good prose in places, all unfortunately held together by a chronic case of telling, not showing. So much potential but ultimately let down.

Imagine stumbling into Wonderland or Narnia and realizing that the book you loved your whole life is actually real. And then. As you are settling into this realization and splendor, all your favorite characters try to kill you.

This is a fun book, if not a little repetitive. I think overall the idea was really cool. The beginning was a slow burn, creepy in the reveal what was unfolding. But the “hunt” got a bit redundant.

I liked it, didn’t love it. Definite points for originality and quality of writing which kept me reading to the end.
