Will be thinking about this one for a while. I loved the way it was written, and the story felt so unique and fresh but also ancient in a way. It’s a hard book to describe.

Content-wise a challenging read, it goes to some dark places and doesn't hold back. Themes regarding religion, both as a force for good and evil, and as something which can connect or divide us, as well as a brutal examination of the broken system that exploits the underprivileged and vulnerable make this resonant but difficult.

I’m sitting here in the dark after finishing this at 2am just trying to wrap my head around it and digest what I just read. I wanted to dnf at 45% but decided to push through. Overall I find myself sort of disappointed by the story. Quatro’s stylistic choices throughout the book were odd, especially towards the last 80 pages or so. The only thing I genuinely enjoyed was the alternate version of the tale between Satan and Jesus and how it was written as a screenplay.
The characters in this are so incredibly tragic. Winston’s especially hit pretty hard considering the current state the country’s in. The scenes with him and Zeke were especially brutal and hard to get through. I did assume his story would go in a different direction than it did and I don’t know if my disappointment in the book comes from the disappointment in being wrong. I did find Micheal’s story to be sort of lack luster and if it was on purpose, for whatever reason, then it wasn’t the right choice, imo.
At the end of the day I don’t know if I’d recommend this to people. Still glad I pushed through and finished despite wanting to dnf half way through. Maybe I’ll change the rating once it’s had time to marinate in my brain in the morning. But for now, 2.75 will have to suffice.
