From my Instagram (kellylibrarian):
Book number 3 of 2019 was Spoonbenders by Daryl Gregory.
It was... ok. I wanted to like this on so much, and ultimately I did like it, but not so much. I had a hard time getting into it and connecting with the characters. Especially Frankie. I hated Frankie. Whenever I got to one of his POV chapters I almost put the book down.
The last half was definitely much easier to read than the first, which was nice.
It also seemed like this book was written to be a movie, which is fine, but I think it makes a book less nuanced.

Overall I enjoyed, but not as much as I though I would especially considering the premise seemed like the book was written for me.
What should I read now while I wait for my @bookofthemonth shipment to arrive?

I guess I went on a Midwest binge in September and this was in the middle of that spree. It takes place outside of Chicago which is a delight for those of us born and raised in the near-west suburbs. This one falls firmly in the "why haven't more people read this book?" column. It's just magic-y and just quirky enough. The audio is fabulous.

having gone through times in my younger years when I thought there would be nothing better than having ESP, this book about a family of uniquely gifted children - now adults - offers a unique plot, a good lesson (no gift comes without an offsetting challenge) and good characters.

I found the first half of this book very painful to get through. However the second half redeemed it. It was an interesting and entertaining story about a family with psychic powers, headed by a con man patriarch, who run into some trouble with the mob. I think the reason I had trouble connecting with the first half was because of the characters were particularly likeable overtime however they grew I need a little bit at least in terms of entertainment value even if you might not want to befriend any of them.

Fun read.

Great quirky characters, even the naughty ones. Interesting adventures and quite a few laughs. I enjoyed this book a lot more before I read the author's note at the end.

This book had so much promise. I love the idea of a family with magical powers, but it just fell flat. I got lost between all the different characters, particularly as some of the storylines jump back in time.

I enjoyed some of it, but was just bored, despite the wild plot. I’m glad to be onto something new. Next!

I wasn't sure what to think of this one at first. It was a bit strange and seemed to meander... But the voice was excellent and the characters were all engaging. It didn't take long for things to begin to come together -- and then I was hooked!

To me, this novel is, at its heart, above family and the love they have for each other. They may not all be good at showing it, but they all want to be good for each other. Since they're human, we've got issues with self esteem, regrets, resentments, confusion, and all the rest. However, since this is a book about psychics, the powers are thrown into the mix. What is it like for someone who can never be lied to? How about someone that sees the future already mapped out?

As all the family threads come together, it's feels like the magic tricks that pop up in the book -- there's plenty of sleight of hand and engaging exposition that ends with the reader delighted and full of wonder.

I'm glad I was able to obtain an early copy of the book to review.
