Sometimes you listen to the first 12 hours of a book and think, "Can't wait for this to be over and for me to completely dispose of this memory," and then in the last 3 hours you are thrown one of the laziest and most out-of-left-field plot twists that you can't help watch the seconds tick down until you can finally move on.

This story started out with a compelling concept of a secluded school with a mysterious tenth girl (not to be mixed up with the ten students or maybe? Idk) with cultural immersion potential in the form of a fictional Zapchue tribe, but nothing was actually really explored? And after 15 hours I can't say I give a hoot about any of these characters, their world, their struggles, any of it. The horror of everything was bland and used for shock-value, and the plot twist voids the entire 12+ hours spent on a narrative that you hoped would add up to something more. And when a writing style is so poetic and verbose that you can't even remember what the point of the actual narrative is, you're left wondering whether you should just drop it, even right before the climax of the story, or even in the climax of the story, or even in the last 30 mins...

Had all the right ingredients but still, something was missing throughout. And then, that ending?! WTF?!?!??

This book dragged on and on, almost having no plot, until the last few chapters.

This book was terrible and a waste of time. I am glad it is over.

I'm giving this three for now because I am undecided. It took me a bit to get into this one and then I was super into it and really into the ghost aspect of everything and then the test happened and I was just like...what? Really? I kind of hated that was the twist. I don't know. This book is weird, that is for sure and I just can't figure out it in my hand whether or not I actually liked it as a whole or not. Definitely parts I liked and it gave me a lot of that atmospheric spookiness I was looking for but then that twist happens and it just zipped me right out of it...what a weird weird book

honestly, what did i just read? i kept at it hoping it would get better but….2 stars for being somewhat entertaining i guess. weird abrupt plot twist with no buildup and too many negative racial/indigenous tropes + colonizer + pedophilia issues. had potential to be much better than it actually was.

DID NOT FINISH

DNF @12%. The audiobook was much better than the physical book, but it was still not worth it. I had been spoiled for the twist at the ending (does not ever impact my enjoyment) but I knew the payoff at the end would not be worth finishing the remaining 14 hours of the audiobook
