DNF
I went into this feeling hopeful, and each element introduced promised to be exciting and creepy and gothic. But I'm somehow just bored following these characters around. The main characters is a teacher, but somehow only a year or so older than her students. She's repeatedly told not to socialize with the students outside of class, leave the dean's son alone, stay in her room after hours, and flaunts the rules over and over. And our other perspective we're following is a ghost haunting the school, and he possesses the body of the dean's son. The chapters hop back and forth between the perspectives, but it repeats time periods, so I'm having a hard time following. I also can't get a good grasp on the main girl's motivations or her personality. And the title of the book references this tenth girl, possibly a tenth student, but it's like a running joke that she's not real, or is actually a ghost. I think the author was meant to be mysterious, but there are so many inconsistencies between characters and story and setting, I just don't really care. Had to DNF, as I really didn't understand what was going on anymore.

Wow, this book was not the book for me, at all. A full review will be posted on instagram soon.

Trigger warnings: self-harm, suicide, miscarriage, STATUTORY RAPE, PEDOPHILIA
okay so, I had some...high expectations going into this book. I mean just look at this cover, it's beautiful. With a creepy atmosphere that reminds me of those horror movies, you find on syfy, I thought I found a winner. Unfortunately, I couldn't be more wrong.
The writing was good... I'll give it that and because of that, I'm quite interested in seeing future works by the author. But I literally felt like this book was just going in circles and getting nowhere. Angel's POV was... confusing at times and I didn't enjoy reading from her as much as I did Mavi's. There wasn't really any character development and at times it was quite confusing (even though yes I know it's supposed to be a horror/mystery, but still.)
One of the things that really brought it down for me was the plot twist that was a complete 180. It changed everything and I will say that it was a clever little plot twist I didn't see coming. Despite that, I don't feel like it worked for this story because after that, might as well throw out the first half of the book and pretend it never happened and not to mention it was SO confusing, I had to re-read a couple of times and still don't understand why. It felt like such a cop-out.
Another big thing for me is the trigger warnings. Yes, I do agree that writers can write what they want, it's not terrible to have triggering content as long as it's done respectfully. But you have to challenge it. And in this case, it wasn't challenged. And I am talking about the statutory rape and pedophilia, and this is where the spoilers come in okay.
So if you don't wanna see spoilers, don't read.

So basically, the plot twist is that its a game, none of it's real and it's solely for peoples enjoyment and the "others" are the players who upload their consciousness into the game. In the book, the girls who might I add, are between the ages of 10-14/15 tops, report that men touch them at night, and what to the characters/npc's say? Oh okay how wrong let's see what's happening and honestly do nothing about it???? Also, the fact that people upload their consciousness into a game to touch little girls, CHILDREN (idec if it's a game) is just wrong.
And might I add, none of it was challenged. Not to mention one of the teachers 'Mr Lamm' was basically accused of touching the girls, the characters, specifically Mavi, we're like oh no he could never we need to investigate this more, if he did, it's terrible, but how could he? He's a sweet man. Like.... que...??? QUE??? If a little kid comes to you and says this person is touching them inappropriately, you don't look for all the reasons WHy it can't be them. I could honestly go on, but for my sanity, I can't. The pedophilia was not challenged in my eyes and the reasoning for even being IN this book is not okay.

*Triggers: sexual assault, abuse, kidnapping.
I was super excited to read this book because of the dark gothic academia setting. It was a weird, twisty and very dark read as the headline promised it would be. But the pacing was a little off for me.
This story was fast paced at first and then about the 60% mark it got super slow and confusing. I thought the twist at the end was unique, unpredictable and gruesome.
While I know this book isn't for everyone, I think if you enjoy dark academia novels that has a curse you would enjoy this book.
*I would recommend reading reviews of Indigenous reviewers as well on their experience while reading this book since there is a fictitious group of people called the Zapuche tribe.*

Soooo... there are a couple insidious things going on here. The first of which is I'm pretty sure the only reason Faring got published is because she's got clout from working at Penguin Random House. That's the only way I explain it because this is not how a normal human being should write! More importantly though, this could have been a book celebrating her Argentinian heritage and traditional ghost stories, yet Faring chose to take the most racist point of view she could possibly find? This makes me deeply uncomfortable, and having come right off the back of reading Mexican Gothic, I know how sharing a minority culture can be written well. This was not. And I'm not even getting starting on that stupid plot twist...!
Spoiler
At one point very early on, I thought, "oh no, is it gonna be The Sims?" and.... I was not wrong...

DNF it.
I went into this book with super high expectations, came out disappointed. I couldn’t even finish it. Reached the halfway mark and I just couldn’t keep going.
There’s two timelines or something like that with two narrators. And I can’t tell who who those peeps are because I was confused. Anyways, what I got out of this is that here’s a curse on the school, there’s a student missing (I think), some creepy shit is happening but most of the time I was just like “what?”
That’s all I’m going to say because I just finished talking crap about The Starless Sea (another DNF book) and I just don’t want to get into it with this one.

This book was so different than what I expected it to be after reading the description. Usually, that's disappointing but in the case of The Tenth Girl, it was a very pleasant surprise! This book starts out as a paranormal thriller and somehow, seamlessly, ends up with a bit of science fiction. When I got to the last 100 pages, I couldn't put it down, needing to know what was going to happen more than I needed to do anything else!!

Just got boring. I kept getting sleepy during it, and there was this scene where a ghost girl visits the main character. I think it it was meant to be scary, but I honestly didn’t feel any emotion i think it was meant to add tension and make the reader think, “hmm, what’s gonna happen?” But i didn’t think that
